What are some unique ideas for when the bride and groom depart after the reception?

I am looking for something a little different than the normal bird seed, but I can't really think of any good ideas that haven't been done. We considered sparklers but when we tried them out over the 4th we realized that they really don't last long and there was a lot more smoke than I realized. A friend did balloons, but we are leaving after dark so that wouldn't really work...any ideas?
 
I feel like candles will make it feel like a memorial or something sad.

I've actually seen real live butterflies let go at a wedding. I thought it was awesome, I really wanted to do it too. They come in a box, and you open it up and they all take off!

Otherwise, you could use the traditional bubbles like everyone else does. The sparkler idea would be really cool, too bad it didn't work out!
