what are some tips for getting a good ratio

I was joking, anon. :) We get a lot of similar/repeat questions around here. Some are deliberate attempts to start spam, others (like this one, I think) are sincere. But, yeah, the best place to find an answer would be via the "search" function. :D
 
don't think this has been mentioned yet: cross seed! download the content from one tracker and then set it up to seed on the one you have difficulty with (if the content is not 100% the same, set it up as a partial seed, so you still don't download any more data from the tracker where you are trying to improve ratio). it essentially becomes freeleech on the second tracker, because you are only uploading. this allows you to leverage the freeleech or easiness of building ratio of one tracker, into ratio on another tracker where there's no freeleech or where i difficult to build ratio. This works especially well if the first tracker, where you are getting the data, has better pretimes than the second tracker. if so, you could be ready to be a seeder as soon as the torrent gets uploaded to the second tracker (sometimes i've seen this type of crosseeding referred to as "pre seeding" )
 
There are a few things that you can do.

1. Download big freeleech packs. Obviously this only works if the site has free leech.
2. Download popular TV shows.
3. Seed! Never delete torrents and leave your computer on 24/7
4. If you have the option, upload your own content.
5. Part download files. Instead of downloading the whole thing grab a few rars then just seed them.
6. Set up irc/rss to auto download torrents. This will get you in early when alot of the seeding goes on.

That's most of the basic stuff. Hope it helps.
 
To me u have 2 options,
Join a ratio free site like pretome (easy to get in) or gft (tough to get in)
or Rent a seedbox for 1 month, pay the 30-40 bucks and you will have enough buffer for a couple of years.

If your rubbing your nickels together then join ratio free. For me i just gave up my seedbox after a few months. Have huge buffer on about a half dozen sites.

I definitely would not focus on just 1-2 sites. You will end up in the cold when that site goes down. I think its a good idea to have 4-6 sites u regualarily use if u watch tv,movies, and play games. I tried the freeleech way for a couple of months on my home connection and it took a month to upload 30 gigs. I was downloading that much from the site and was hovering around 1 : 1 ratio. First day with seedbox and uploaded 50 gigs.
 
all my buffers come from freeleech, as I do not overseed or cross seed much anymore since it makes it harder (or impossible) for everyone else on the torrents to reach 1/1. Just seed all freeleech back to 1/1 and you will have that amount of buffer.
 
Only belong to trackers that fit your connection and downloading habits.
Unfortunately with seedboxes ,or rather certain sites reluctance to acknowledge that it isn't 2003 anymore, those are becoming increasing difficult to find.

Focus on that one tracker. Pause or remove all other torrents. In fact, going one or two torrents at a time is optimal.

Only download stuff on the day it is posted.

Calculate how long each file will take to seed back at your average upload rate and consider whether it is worthwhile to download.

If it will take to long to seed back, then don't download it. Most of the time, you can wait a few weeks and grab it there or at another tracker when you've got yourself set up and don't need to focus on the new tracker.

instead of sitting for 4 hours you can also just go to their pre channel and/or announce channel on irc and set up a highlight notification with the file you're waiting for
 
Cross-seeding, RSSing TV shows, and freeleech is the way to go. Although from my experience auto-dling popular TV shows via an RSS downloader is the fastest way, if the tracker lacks a proper archive/freeleech section like SCC. I remember setting up rssdler on my rTorrent box and seeding upwards of 10+ GB just off Heroes. Good times :).

No one seems to have mentioned it again, but this is actually good advice. Porn is a great investment as it's downloaded often and has longevity (unlike TV/games which will die down after the hype is gone, porn will always be downloaded). It's actually a great way to keep up your ratio, and they aren't "useless" files you download simply to keep a ratio :whistling
 
Brian, Cabalo gave you a chance. He thinks you are able to form a complete sentence, and be of value here. You are either proving him wrong or me.

OK, he never actually said the "complete sentence" thing, but if we don't raise the high-bar, you will never grow.
