What are some things of which to be aware when purchasing a used bicycle?

I need a bike for daily practice (15 km per day). I thought I would buy a used bike because it's a lot cheaper, but I have no clue what to look for because my last bike (now stolen) was from a garage sale and it worked well.

What brands should I look for? My budget is $100-150 for a used bicycle and I don't want to get ripped!
