It depends on to whom you are speaking. A new girlfriend, recent acquaintance, old buddy from high school, your boss, a potential customer, etc. With a new girlfriend you might probe a bit to find out what she responds to. For example, you could say that you were just listening to some music after work since it was raining out and you did not feel like getting wet on your daily run. That way she could ask you what kind of music you like if she likes music or she could turn to the rain part expressing her love or dislike of rain or she might say she runs everyday as well but did not go out either due to rain. Now what you have done is opened up three separate avenues to converse about. With customers and bosses sports and golf is usually pretty safe if you are guys. Women I think like to talk about current affairs and humanitarian things. That's my take. If you are computer savvy that is always another avenue - talk about Vista, Mac & PC, free software, LimeWire etc. Going Green is another one.
