What are some good things to write about in a letter to men in naval boot camp?

I'm doing an NHS project. We're writing christmas cards to sailors who are in boot camp but aren't spending christmas with their families.
What would be some good criteria for the letters?
 
Tell them about your day. Tell them about going to the movies, what you had for lunch, your friends, what you learned in school.

They are so bored and desperate for normalcy, they'll love just hearing anything.
