What are some books that both boys and girls would like reading?

Kay, so my sister is in a reading group at school for a project. They have to find a book school appropriate and at or above an 8th grade level. There are both boys and girls in their group, so nothing like Twilight, and Harry Potter has been voted out. What are some good books that you know of that appeal to both sexes in this age group. Also, The Hunger Games and The Outsiders have been thought of previously but aren't available, so please don't suggest these. That you so much if you can help!

Peeps by Scott Westerfeld
Midnighters by Scott Westerfeld
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (kind of older, but if they're mature, it will be fine)
The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Samuel Clemmens (alias on the book "Mark Twain")
My daddy read me that one, and I loved it! Im a girl BTW its SO HILARIOUS THAT BOOK!!!

Written in the 1800's BTW.

Why would Harry Potter be voted out?

All right, try these:

Cirque Du Freak, by Darren Shan
A Series of Unfortunate Events, Lemony Snicket
The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
Flipped, Wendelin Van Draanen
Where the Red Fern Grows, Wilson Rawls

I'm sure there's more in my reading list, but I just thought of these for now. Enjoy!

Crank & Glass by Ellen Hopkins, they should be good.

Books by Marcus Sedgwick, My Swordhand Is Singing & The Foreshadowing are good.

Bloodline 1 & 2 by Kate Cary.

The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga

Beautiful City of the Dead by Leander Watts
