I actually honestly recommend community colleges. I went to one before transferring to a major university. I received more one on one teaching from my professors, they were more willing to help me, the class size was smaller so there was more opportunity for class discussion, the tuition is much less expensive, and I got higher grades. Plus 66 of my community college hours transferred directly to my university and I went directly into my major's program without having to take any additional core classes, which if you've ever done your major's coursework while still trying to take core classes, it can be very stressful.
I strongly recommend community colleges. That's just my opinion though. Plus, I think it will help you when actually applying to a university because I strongly feel it will help you get better grades and boost that GPA if you need to. I think the reason for this is because community colleges are much more "student centered" and without as much outside influence (like athletics, fraternities, sororities, etc) there's less time to party and more time to focus on academics.
