What are Muslims to do (especially in Western cultures) when someone "bad mouths" Islam?

Are Muslims to talk back to them and defend their religion or should they simply pray for the non-believer and let Allah do as He wills? Can you give me scripture from the Quran regarding this?

What I really mean to ask is this obligatory or is Allah pleased when we bite our tongues and persevere by having faith in His justice?

Reason I'm asking is beause al-Baquara 216-218 talks about defending Islam and fighting back *only* when they first attack Muslims and when they drive them out of their homes. Does this apply to verbal wars (arguments) as well?

Thanks sooo much :)

In Islam we Muslims have to defend our religion and our Muslim brothers/sisters every where. Specially when they are oppressed because of their faith.

Now here in the west, lot of folks have a problem with Islam and Muslims but most of it is based on ignorance. It is not wise to talk and fight back with every guy on the street, sometimes it is best to ignore and walk away. It is best to lead with example, to show the people around us what Islam is really all about. If you think you can make a difference with a friend/classmate/co-worker then that would be a different story.

Allah says in the Qur'an chapter 6, verse 108
" Revile not those unto whom they pray beside Allah lest they wrongfully revile Allah through ignorance. Thus unto every nation have We made their deed seem fair. Then unto their Lord is their return, and He will tell them what they used to do."

If you do end up in a long argument with them, it will end up messy.

Personally, I think we should give it back in like manner. If someone wants to debate you about religion, debate them to the best of your knowledge. If someone wants to fight you over it, fight them to the best of your ability. If someone wants to go to war over it, annihilate them.
