What are good pedals for a first pedalboard?

Okay, so I'm building my first pedalboard, having decided to move up from my Boss ME-70. Now, I, like all good guitarists play a variety of genres, ranging from blues to prog rock to reggae to jazz to metal. What I'm looking for is essentially the effects all good pedalboards should have, and which exact box you recommend for each effect.

If it helps, I have a Squier Stratocaster and an SG Standard running through a Mesa Transatlantic.
