What are good books for beginners at photography?

I have a digital SLR camera that I got as a gift. I've played around with it and happened across some decent shots. But I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm tired of using it as point and shoot when I know it's capable of so much more. What are good beginner's books to get me started?
 
For a start you could read the manual. Than you could go to your local bookstore or online and get photography books such as "Mastering Digital Photography" and Digital Photographer's Handbook."
