What are effective techniques to use in a picture book?

I have a page showing grasslands, and it needs to picture a young girl walking on a path. she is a lonely girl. what techniques can be used that aren't too elaborate, that emphasise her isolation from others, while still showing the reader the context of the page (ie: the grass (which i have drawn on already).

Colour is already used, so that's not really a technique.

PS: Could this question be answered by people with skills in illustration (picture books), art, english, and/or techniques in writing/drawings?
