There are two questions here, your latter one is easier.
You have the aztecs, the germanic tribes, the greeks, etc.
For the former, i could easily say that alone, people would not have reached the point they have today.
As a secondary point, i could also say that sometimes it does take an exterior perspective to set things straight.
