Okay, so the title is a little bit strange, but I was wondering, as the title says, which was closest. And by closest, I mean which ancient civilization still showed strong signs of Roman influence after the collapse of the Roman Empire (or the western part, at least). I'm thinking it's Byzantium, but I'm not completely sure. If you can't provide an answer, pointing a few texts or websites that could help would be great. Thanks in advance!
