What am I doing wrong, I am new at this pretty much?

I have a 300 watt 2 channel amp and I have 2 12" subs, at the moment, I am getting a bigger amp, but why does my subs sound like crap when I have both subs hooked up? They even sound like crap when I bridge them? Am I doing something wrong? They don't hit till I unplug one of them and then one hits, these subs do 150 normal and 800 max.
