What advice can you give to someone who hasn't exercised in years.....?

I'm 21 year old man, overweight - 14 stone (196 pounds), 5ft8.

The last time i did any proper exercise was about 3+ years ago. I was pretty fit back then but now i'm overweight and don't have much energy.

Anyway, i am currently out of work at the moment and thought i would use my free time to go to the gym and swimming and hopefully get myself back into shape. I have the dreaded podge belly... and it is really noticeable, i also have a chubby face and i just want to look the way i did a few years ago.

Anyway, today i joined the gym and i will start tomorrow on my fitness regime. I thought i would go swimming today, to make a start for tomorrow at the gym, but today in the swimming i thought i was going to have a heart attack. I swam non-stop... only about 7 lengths and had to get out the pool. Ended up going into the changing rooms and sitting for about 20 minutes as my heart was racing. I know that's the whole point of exercise but i really could not breath ! Do you think this is normal for someone who hasn't even ran in years lol ?

Anyway, can you give me some tips and advice on what i should be doing to start. Obviously, i will ask the gym instructor when i go tomorrow but really just looking for info from people who have recently started exercising??

What should i be doing for the first few weeks? At first i want to lose weight, about 3 stone. And then i will think about muscle building... but first focus is to lose the extra weight.

Should i be going to the gym and swimming on the same day or break days up for both?

Also, can you give me a quick list of foods i should be eating and foods i should not be eating?

Thanks guys :)
