what actually stops the disk working when the xbox 360 falls over with the game running?

my xbox fell over with COD4 init and the disk stopped working but it has like no scratches my MW2 has more n it runs fine. so why dosnt the disk work?
the COD4 dosnt work at all but its hardly scratched
