What about this 'too big to let fail' business?

We have heard this said about many commercial institutions. Why can't we put Social Security into the same catagory? The average American would benefit far more from shoring up the S.S. system than from bailing out AIG.
 
I think it stinks. I don't think anyone bailed out the blacksmiths and wagon makers and horse traders when the car came into being.
I thought success or failure of a company or product was the capitalist way.
Oh that's right...we're moving away from our way of life.
