What about gun laws and past drug use?

I know this guy who has a past history of heavy drug use, including cocaine. He speaks very forcefully about his right to own a gun. Is he wrong...I mean doesn't drug use disqualify you from owning a gun?

It only disqualifies you for owning a gun if you were convicted of a felony drug crime.

Anyone with a felony cannot own a gun for 10 years following (here in California), but it depends what state you live in. When he purchases a weapon, if he has not been caught for cocaine, then he has the right to own one as long as he passes state qualifications.

Doing felony drugs does not disqualify you from owning a gun. Getting caught and convicted of doing felony drugs does. If he has a felony on his record, he cannot own a gun legally.

If he is a continuing user, yes. In Hawaii if you go to rehab for alcohol or drugs you have to get 2 different doctors to certify you as being not crazy.
