What about Filmation Cartoons

Perhaps a lot of cartoon companies can learn a lesson from what happened to Filmation so that those said companies don't meet a similar fate.

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't seen many of Filmation's properties, but if they are anything like the atrocious Filmation Droopy shorts I saw today, I want nothing to do with them. After watching the masterful direction of Tex Avery on the Droopy Theatrical Collection DVD, and then watching some Filmation Droopys, the difference is night and day. The Filmation version was beyond suck in every department: Music, animation, jokes, number of jokes, joke timing, joke creativity, voice acting, plot progression, yuck.

Oh come on, you gotta admit "Bravestarr" had better animation then any other Filmation cartoon and had none of that recycled animation stuff which made it so refreshing and i can't wait for it on DVD.

"Starchaser" which Filmation did uncredited is avalible on DVD and "Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night" is on Youtube.com now in six parts with more parts coming soon. It was a shame that it closed down in 1989, could have been interesting to see sequels to other fairy tales like "Little Red Riding Hood", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Hansel and Gretle" etc and even an animated adaptation of "Alice Through the Looking Glass" consdiering they would have been better then "Happily Ever After".

Uncredited.. Interesting. I've never seen all of 'Starchaser', but i did see 'Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night' on TV once, and while it did have the Filmation logo, and Lou Scheimer's signature, it had some really nice animation that was leagues above their past work most of the time.

Shouldn't this be in Boomerang?

Anyway, I can't believe there are any people out there that liked Ghostbusters. I can understand The Real Ghostbusters, as that show kicked ass, but Filmation's Ghosbusters? *shivers* I still can't believe I actually made it through the first boxset. Hell, the series was so bad the packaging was made super-tight so you had to struggle just to get the DVDs out of the case!

Ain't that the truth. Nearly the entire cast of 'She-Ra' was pretty easy on the eyes. Especialy Frosta. You gotta love how she was flirting with He-Man in 'Sweet Bee's Home'.

Filmation's Ghostbusters wasn't that bad at all.

I really think if people would just realize that Filmation's Ghostbusters was meant to be more of a comedy show that didn't take itself too seriously I think more people would actually enjoy it.

I liked the boxset I just wish the interviews with Lou Scheimer, Tom Sito and the others were longer.

I liked the Real Ghostbusters too, but to be fair Filmation's Ghosbusters are actually the real the ones.

Just because it doesn't take itself seriously doesn't mean it's automatically good. I had to strain just to watch two episodes in a row. It took me almost a month to get through the boxset, whereas it usually takes me less than a business week to watch a normal 26-episode anime series.

Almost everything that came out of Hanna-Barbara (little of which I'd actually shell out money for on DVD) was better than Filmation's Ghostbusters.

Well actually thier Ghostbusters came first before "The Real Ghostbusters" and Bill Murray's hit movies, it all started with their campy yet lovable live-action show in 1975 called "The Ghost Busters" which is on DVD and worth seeking since it's a cult classic show.

AMEN. And while we're on the subject of Lady Jaye, Scarlett, Cover Girl and The Baroness, it should be noted that the late Linda Gary did voice work on some of the characters for both Filmation AND Sunbow cartoons.

I know that. I found that out years ago and then was remineded reviewing the god-awful Ghostbusters boxset.

That still doesn't mean that Filmation's versions are better. Both live-action Ghostbusters films, TRG, and even Extreme Ghostbusters are better than both of Filmation's Ghostbusters shows, though I will say that the live-action one at least gave me chuckles and didn't make me want to chuck my remote into the TV.

...Is this not a thread on Filmation? Never mind that there's been a good number of Filmation threads in the Boomerang forum. Heck, Toon Zone's actually reviewed a good number of Filmation shows including He-Man Volumes 3, 4, and Best, She-Ra and Best of She-Ra (with another review on the way), Ghostbusters, Defenders of the Earth, Flash Gordon, Star Trek: TAS, Space Sentinels, and Blackstar. Why should we pay more attention than neccessary? I mean, we don't even do that for Warner Bros. or Hanna-Barbara.

Filmation's Ghostbusters rocked, for these three reasons:

1: a gorilla in an Indiana Jones hat.
2: the transformation sequence (they get stripped to their underwear and chucked through some kind of skull-filled otherworld - and Jake looks like he's enjoying it)
3: that constipated straining noise made by Prime Evil every time he used the phrase "Ghostbusters".
