What 80's cartoons were considered "good" back when they first aired?

I've rewatched most of the series on DVD lately, and I disagree.

While its true it was episodic and the good guys ALWAYS won by the end of the episode, Shredder/Krang's scheme was still different in every episode. There were also a huge number of one-shot villains in the show, so its not like every ep was the same thing. It's no different than how B:TAS always had Batman defeat the villain of the week by the end of the episode, it was always episodic as well, but people didn't care cause the stories were good.

There are some dated aspects about it, but the stories were funny, the show took risks, and the wacky sci-fi plots still hold up today. Also the show made fun of itself, and breaks the fourth wall in a number of episodes.

While the 4kids TMNT show is a great series based on continuity, the 80's TMNT nailed the episodic and comedic aspect of the franchise.

Could any other of the members here who were adults back then do like JVipond and at least let me know what 80's cartons they personally enjoyed back in that time?

Do teenagers count? I knew some teens (their parents were friends of my family) who liked Dungeons and Dragons and Transformers back in the day.

Okay, one of the old fans will speak.

I'm currently going through my Chronology (go to my website below) for the period. Most of what I liked at that time were adventure shows (although old Warner Bros. theatrical shorts series were a mainstay for many years for me). And there was that one wonderful year I lived in Dallas and could see old Mighty Mouse cartoons in the morning.

But for new first run U. S. shows the two top favorites were Mighty Orbots and Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers (which I taped weekly, despite the marginal reception I had). Other shows that I generally watched and liked were the Filmation versions of the Lone Ranger and Zorro, the Smurfs, the Bionic Six, and Ralph Bakshi's Mighty Mouse. There were also shows that I watched that had occasional good episodes but I'm not going to put together that list. And of course there could be that embarassing list of series that I didn't see at the time but have seen since and have become shows that I will watch when I can ....

Any other old timers out there?

Thanks for answering! But i just can't help but ask one more thing; what did you think of Ninja Turtles? Im always especially interested in hearing opinions about that show, since it was my absolute favorite childhood cartoon (closely followed by Ghostbusters... and My Little Pony:sweat:)

I was only a child during the 80's, so I can't speak for how adults in the 80's felt about the original TMNT cartoon. But as an adult, I disagree with Cybercubed's opinion about the show. As an adult, I can watch old episodes of the original G.I.Joe, Transformers, and Thundercats. But I really have a hard time sitting through episodes of the original TMNT, especially now after having seen the 2003 TMNT cartoon. It's possible that adults may have enjoyed the original TMNT when it first aired, but I would have to imagine that most adults wouldn't be very entertained sitting through episodes of it today.

I hated the early version. I was at least partially into the early issues of the original comic books and was extremely disappointed with the tv show's kiddification of the story, characters, art, etc. Not that I was that surprised by what was done but I had hoped that something of the more adult attitudes of the comic book might survive the transition. The more modern version of the show during the last few years has at least been watchable by me.
