Whales, why do they need to be eaten?

Now the whole world knows Japanese catch, kill and eat whales(except the ordinary japanese they have no idea) and maybe 1% are used for so called medical whatever. The whalers say they need the whales for study, so what happens when there is no more whales, will they come after something found only in australia (koala) in the future.
