Were You Allowed To Watch Films That Wasn't Your Age Certificate?

yeah i was. i got in to see sweeney todd when i was 17. and bridget jones when i was 14

plus my parents aren't that fussed what i watch. they'll tell me if they think it's rubbish, but won't try and stop me watching it
 
When I were a lad the only way to watch films at home was to get your own projector, which wasn't really practicable.

I've just checked and I did watch X-rated films on TV, but if I remember correctly they weren't advertised as such, so no one was any the wiser. Unfortunately most films that were rated X in the past are now considered suitable for anyone over 12, so it's not surprising the BBC showed them without warnings.
 
Sometimes it depenRAB if it was a school day or not,when i was around 13 i was aloud to watch certain 18 cert films but not really violent stuff
 
in the age if video nasties, got to see films like driller killer, the exorcist and zombie flesh eaters when I was 12-14 . video owner knew us and we used to get the best he had:)
 
TBH, my parents weren't that strict but i do remember watching a few before i was the age that the film was rated but i didn't watch many because if it said it was a 12 or 18, i didn't really want to watch them until i was the right age.

I didn't really watch horror and when i do, i don't get scared because i'm quite production savvy.

I think the worst i ever did was watch the Matrix which is a 15 when i was about 12 - my brother had just got it on dvd and i think he showed me one of the most violent bits first. I had to persuade my mum to let me watch the rest of it though.
 
Yeah, I was so scared of I Know What You Did Last Summer when I was about 10!

If a film was on TV and it was within my bedtime limits I could watch it basically.

And from the age of about 14 If I wanted an 18 on DVD my parents would buy it, within reason obviously not just anything and everything I wanted but if it was a horror for a birthday or Christmas I would get it.
 
I watched my first 18 film at a frienRAB house when I was 6. My parents never really minded what films I watched. I can still remember watching The Thing with my dad when I was about eight and my older sister hiding upstairs as she thought it was too scary.
 
Yeah. My Dad used to bring home videos back in the late 70's when people were just starting to buy VCRs.

Our first video was The Exorcist. I'd have been 10 or 11 I guess. I thought it was fantastic and bored my mate about it all the way to school the next day.

Watched it again recently and was very disappointed to find that it was a really really dull movie until the Exorcism happened.

Watched the Godfather, and all of the Omen movies and a variety of slasher movies around the same time. They all seemed thrilling to a not even a teenager yet. When you watch them now you realise how poor they were mostly.
 
TBH,there weren't many popular 18 rated movies I hadn't seen before I reached the age 10.Maybe a little young in retrospect,and although I didn't understand everything in these movies I am glad I did see them at the that early age.

Unless you're of a timid nature,most horror movies don't really work once you reach 18 (I suppose some good intense/psychological/spooky ones do,to an extent ).

I got to be frightened by the likes of Freddy Krueger/Jason Vorhees/Chucky/etc.
At 18,I'd have laughed at Freddy and co.
 
I grow up on movies that were 15 & 18 from the age of 3. The first I watched was Commando, then I became hardcore arnie fan. I was bought Aliens Special Edition when it frst came out on video. I was told don't repeat the rude worRAB and you can watch them.
 
Both my parents were quiet strict on what movies i could watch at a young age. I guess being the eldest sibling meant i had no one to sneak me into watching 18 rated movies at night.

But whenever i stayed over at my cousins, we'd always watch movies above our age - especially horror movies. I watched The Exorcist at the age of 10 and i almost wet myself with fright. Couldn't sleep for days and ended up telling my parents why i was afraid of the dark - they were not to pleased. :p

Now though, with my youngest sister being 13, she gets to watch 15 & 18 rated movies because she gets to watch it with me, but when i was her age - no way would i have had that privilege. *sigh*

Anyway, that is my short & sad story! :p
 
Having older brothers I regularly used to watch 18 films when I was a young kid (7ish). I used to get into see 15 rated films when I was around 11-12.

I think it's different now though, as for films to get an 18 they need to be really over the top, plus with the advances of sfx and cgi films are far more realistic. I think alot of the 80s horror films like elm street would classed as a 15.
 
That's true.

Elm Street 1-3 (just too intense) wouldn't have got by on a 15,but the sequels would have
The Terminator (and most other Arnie movies) would never have gotten an 18 certificate if passed by the BBFC now.
The majority of the Friday the 13th movies would have scraped by on a 15.
Texas Chainsaw 2 and 3 (which were banned here initially) may have gotten by on 15 if shown for the first time now.
'Video nasties' Evil Dead 1 & 2 getby on a 15 now.
