As soon as I mentioned LPR, he said I should go to a Gastro. doctor. I mentioned I'd been there already. Well, he eventually set me up for a Phise/Fis/Fise test. They said they would insert a tube through my nose. What's the difference between this kind of test and an esophageal manometry? I would appreciate any help as the test is on Wednesday. Thanks.

I'm sorry, it's called a FEESST test. Anyone know anything about it, or either better, had it done?

I've been to several ENTs and Gastros, and finally one ENT set me up for an appt for a FEEAST test as well. I spoke to my main ENT, and he told me the test would not be able to show if I have reflux and is completely pointless, and I cancelled my appt. I don't know, it seems every doctor says something different. It really is very weird and frustrating.

FEESST is the state of the art non-radioactive alternative to modified barium swallow studies. This exam will allow for direct assessment of the motor and sensory aspects of the swallow in order to precisely guide the dietary and behavioral management of patients with swallowing problems to decrease the risk of aspiration pneumonia.

Velopharyngeal closure, anatomy of the base of the tongue and hypopharynx, abduction and adduction of the vocal folRAB, pharyngeal musculature and the patient's ability to manage his/her own secretions are assessed. Laryngopharyngeal reflux [LPR] can also be visualized.

FEESST also allows evaluation of extra-esophageal manifestations of gastro-esophageal reflux (Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR)) including asthma, hoarseness, laryngitis, globus and aspiration.

Thanks for the replies.

I just wanted to update and say that I had the test. The whole thing lasted about 3-5 minutes. It felt like someone put a little bit of soap in my nose and throat. There was no sedative or anastesia given. Of course there's discomfort, but it's alot less discomfort than an endoscopy. And it doesn't have the same 1-2 day post-procedure discomfort that an endoscopy has.

So if I wanted this done would I need a referral from my regular doctor?? I had the endoscopy done and they found nothing. But my problem is located in the throat. Just constant mucus. It does make me hoarse. Makes me feel like I have a touch of Asthma.

Glad you got your test out of the way. I hope things turned out well.

I just had a referral to see an ENT. He barely looked at me on our first meeting. He did a quick check of my nose to see if there was infection, then he ordered 3 things for me right away:

1.) The FEESST test
2.) A meeting with their resident Allergist
3.) A Cat-Scan of my sinuses (I haven't had this done yet though, and I'll probably put this off for quite a bit).

As you can see from the two posters below me though, one believes that it can detect LPR, and the other one thinks it doesn't. I don't know who to believe.

Also, I would like to find out, what is the difference between a FEESST test and an Esophageal manometry?
