Can someone shed some light for me please -

why do multiplexes often show a movie at a strange time of day once a week?

For example, the local multiplex near me is showing Stranger Than Fiction - a movie that was released last December - in a one-off showing on Monday at 1.30 in the afternoon.

Also, they're showing the new Bean movie which isn't on general release until Friday every hour on the hour this weekend?

Any ideas please?
 
The Mr Bean film is being shown this weekend as a preview to it's general release.

As for your local multiplex showing Stranger Than Fiction on Monday as a one off, that could be a promotion they are doing. At the cinema where I work, every Wednesday we do a 'Senior Screen' where we show a film that has been released for a few months and the admission is
 
Having worked for a multiplex cinema chain for 8 years, the simple answer is because it is a one off special performance for those people who may have missed it when it was released or liked it so can watch it again. I'm not sure which chain you are near, but the company i worked for had a special performance on a monday afternoon around that time for 'older' people, with cheaper tickets, and with a film that is aimed at their age bracket, to encourage them to come to the cinema. It's not always easy for a senior citizen, which this time was aimed at to make it the cinema of an evening and they can't always afford a full price ticket, so a lot of multiplex chains offer the 'silver screen, monday classic' option.
