I really love films that present a different perspective on America, it's culture and the American Dream, or tell stories about interesting characters, of course the daddy of this genre(?) is David Lynch IMO, but there have been a number of films made that have a dark quality to them. I hope you get what I mean.
Some of my faves are;
Brewster McCloud with the brilliant Bud Cort
They Shoot Horses Don't They?
The Passion of Darkly Noon
Slingblade - this is one of my fave movies of all time, Billy Bob Thornton is one hell of an actor!
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Barton Fink
Blue Velvet
Paris Texas
The King of Marvin Gardens
Five Easy Pieces
to name but a few... OK so it's not a genre so to speak, just brilliant films that aren't fodder for the masses, (though some fodder is very good, I hasten to add). The 70's in particular produced some wonderful and dark movies that questioned the American Dream or attempted to expose the darker side of it.
Anyway, which are your faves, would you recommend anything?
