Weighted vest for pre-training for Basic Training?

I'm going to be going into basic in January but I need to lose a little weight first (not needed, but preferred). I currently work at Dairy Queen and am constantly moving from place to place in the store. I bought a Gold Gym 20 lbs Weighted Vest and going to wear it under my uniform. Is this a good way to get in shape in a short amount of time (also going to join 24 hour fitness and wear it there).
