Got this one from Anteater:

Pain of Salvation-Entropia (1997)

Prog-metal has always been a pretty polarizing genre for me, and this album isn't an exception. I had a friend in high school who listened to a lot of Symphony X, I guess you could loosely compare this album to that although there are differences. This album is downright funky at points, with slap-bass on multiple songs and constant time-signature changes similar to what you might expect from a math-rock band. Also, Entropia does a fairly good job of attempting to balance out the heavy songs with some lighter moments.

There are a few things that tripped me up with this album. As with a lot of music in this particular genre, the vocals were difficult for me to get past. Since this is a concept album revolving around a father being forced to go off and fight in a war and leave his family behind, some of the songs (Oblivion Ocean is the main one I remeraber) rely on the vocals and the lyrics to keep things going, which didn't do much for me. The singer (Daniel Gildenlow) does have great range though, and when the band was rocking out with him IMO his voice fit in much better (such as on People Passing By, the high point of the album for me).

This album did have a few really cool moments (People Passing By, the intro to Stress), but overall I often found myself getting hung up on the vocals too much to be able to enjoy the instrumentation, which was solid when it kicked in. Good listen though as I probably wouldn't have found this one on my own. Thanks Anteater!

Duga sent me:

Asobi Seksu - Hush

asobi_seksu_hush.jpg

I came into this with high hopes given the glowing praise Duga gave it earlier. Listening to it, one tenRAB to zone out and let it wash over you. This experience was nice and quite soothing.

However, when I listened to Hush, the third record from female shoegaze artist Asobi Seksu (who's totally hot by the way), again, I noticed significant flaws. While Seksu's voice is calm and suited to the style of music, the songs themselves fall flat, coming across as uninspired. Shoegaze by rote.

There are redeeming factors of course, such as the pieces that rely less on arabient noise and more on Seksu's voice and lyrics, which are great at times. Thanks for the album though, it provoked me to download Citrus, which I much prefer.

5/10

Yeah, I posted in that thread. But at least with this thread, you'd be forcing your partner to listen to your mix, whereas the 10-track-mixtape thread is just kind of a "here it is, I hope someone downloaRAB it" thing.

Glad you enjoyed it:) For me, my easy favorite is the cover of Ride's Vapour Trail...I think it may just be the best cover of any song I've ever heard. I really can't decide honestly whether I prefer Ride or TW's version, and that's saying something because the original is also one of my favorite songs of all time.

LoathsomePete at the minute is running this on his own i think and is probably weighed down with a few other mod-like things at the minute but keep checking back, he will probably put a notice in here before the next round begins so you will have time to put your name down.

Also partners are allocated for you, we don't pick our own.

To clarify does this just involve sending an album you like that you think someone else might appreciate. Are we looking at something more niche, as I guess we don't know what other people have heard and what they haven't?

Rezz sent me Jalamant by Brant Bjork in the last trading thing. This is the first album I've heard that's labeled as "stoner rock", and given how much I liked this I'll have to look further into that genre. It's really laid-back, mellow-ish rock music, and as people on RYM say it "is chill as hell" and "the ultimate album for just kicking back". I'd rate it 4.5/5 or so, it was really good.

From RezZ:
Hermano - Only a Suggestion

It's an alright cover. I'm thinking either RezZ didn't realize it was a cover theme or else I am really missing something. Probably the latter. It's whatever though, cause the music is what's really important in the end, and this is some really really good music.

Hermano is completely new to me. Never heard them or even read of them, so I was going in completely fresh. I put it in mediamonkey and the genre came up as 'stoner rock'. Ok, ok, nice.

The first song came on and, I'll be completely honest and admit, I wasn't digging this at first. The opener to me sounded alot like straight ahead grunge or something from Audioslave maybe. I was a little put off as I'm not a big fan of either of these, and in the end I think this was probably my least favorite tune on here.

As it continued though I found myself starting to enjoy this album more and more. Somewhere between the second and third song, in my head, they started sounding less like Audioslave and more like old Corrosion of Conformity...a band I DO enjoy. The guitars sounded really fuzzy, and there was some really cool solo's. I liked the singers style as well, as he didn't really stand out and try to put himself in front of the music, but there was quite a few times where his intensity and emotion made you take notice. It was only 8 songs long, so it definitely didn't overstay its welcome either.

Just listened to it a second time through as I was writing this. I think my favorite songs here would be Senor Moreno's Plan (cool cool intro), Manager's Special and Nick's Yeah.

I could easily see myself checking out more from these guys and calling myself a fan in the future. So thx for sending this at me RezZ. :thurab:

i got
Built To Spill - Keep It Like a Secret

its actually pretty good. very interesting, i actually expected more harder stuff from sidewinder but i guess he like's... uhmm... i'm not sure what genre you'd actually classify it as (maybe Alternative). "The Plan" was pretty good. thanks sidewinder

Any idea why send space/mediafire won't upload correctly for me? My internet connections fine and it's high speed. I've used them plenty of times before but it's just happened recently. I've tried on two different computer. It either doesn't load at all and just sits at 0% forever or loaRAB very slowly and gives me an estimated upload time of like 12 hours. If I can't figure this out I guess I'll have to drop out.
