Weekly Music Trading Post

I wont lie, thats a great cover.

NEW RULE: I am going to make a revision to the rules in this thread. Just to assure that everyone actually gets an album and isnt left in the dark by lazy incompetent partners. FROM THIS POINT ON you must PM me each week (before the end of Saturday) if you would like to participate in the upcoming weeks trade. I realize this is a bit of a hassle, but i am afraid if it stays as is then slowly people will forget and not send anything.

So pm by tomorrow if you'd like to be in next weeks!

Yeah, it seems to be what Trace87 said, a love it or hate it. Really, though, I don't hate it at all. 2/5 is actually a pretty good rating for me. You have to understand, there are only five stars. Albums like TheVU&Nico could be 6/5 because they exceed all of my expectations period. Then there have to be room for the albums that blow me away, like Cave's FHTE, but are not a 6/5, those have to be 5/5. So where do I put things at par with Harvey's Dance Hall? 4/5. So 3/5 is still actually a great rating, stuff like Gram Rabbit, 13th Floor Elevators, MGMT, etc. So, 2/5 just isn't as good as this or this. Other 2/5's for me would be The Donnie Darko Soundtrack, early Beatles albums, Ratatat, etc. 1/5 is anything at all below The Unicorns, and that sounRAB bad, but really, I enjoy a lot of music I would call 1/5.

I've been listening to this Soul Compilation today, mostly while driving (I needed a nice drive), and that kept me pretty much in the same place but I loved it. Maybe it was because I was driving, or maybe I'm just not the type to like being where The Unicorns took me for too long. Two things that are important to note: 1)The Mars Volta I think are great, but I don't like being where they take me for too long, either. 2)Ratings are personal and don't really have a standard, and this is just one opinion.

Just so you all know, I'm definitely glad I heard the album. I wanted to dive further into the indie thing anyway, as I don't know much about it, so it was perfect that I got this album from the trading post- the system worked great and I was sure happy with it.

Well once we hit Deceraber perhaps a holiday themed one. Whether it's Christmas, Hanuka, Kwanzaa, or even the hustle and bustle of shoppers during the season, I'm sure there could be some different interpretations of that theme that differ from 'wintery albums'.

Cool as it'd be for it to be something akin to the world cup draw, I just take people's names out a hat and pair them up that way. So, nah, nowt spectacular!

Anyhoo, this one from Dreadnaught...

Jens Lekman - Oh You're Silent Jens

I'd be lying if I said I knew Dreadnaught's musical tastes inside-out, so I didn't really have any idea what to expect when we ended up being paired up for this thing. She did tell me it was something she initially had in mind for the last themed trade (the wintry one), so that gave me some idea, albeit a very vague one.

What I ended up with was a very cold (oddly enough), downbeat and lyric-centric album, dominated by Lekman's deep, throaty vocal. It makes for an interesting, piano-led, indie-leaning slant on folk, and there definitely is a gorgeous atmosphere to the album as a whole conjured by some great performances behind the keyboard. In the main, it's a fairly sedated album and perfect for a spin or two on a cold, sober night in on your lonesome. There are one or two more uptempo moments to be found (like the terrific Maple Leaves), but in the main it's an album that's nicely summed up by the cover art. There's the occasional (sparse) use of brass and studio trickery like alternating vocal tracks dotted around here too.

A very good album for sure then. It didn't exactly blow me away but, then again, it's very very rarely that a new album I get does. I'm glad I got this though, so ta for the link!

You sent me Infected Mushroom, right? I reviewed that.

I'm going to get Antonio's album reviewed today, my headphones broke so I have to play sh‎it through my speakers. Have to wait till people bugger off for a while.
