No Age - Weirdo Rippers
B000OPP7WM.01.L.jpg

This album is a compilation of songs No Age performed during a flurry of live shows which you can actually pick up from the music. All of the songs are lively and full of energy which is something I look for in music so that's definitely a plus. I guess you can classify their music as experimental rock (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) which is a genre I enjoy so that's also a plus.

Funny thing is I thought I hadn't heard No Age before although I really enjoyed Nouns. That probably should have led to me listening to this album ages ago so I guess I'm getting senile in my old age.

My only beef with this album is that a lot of the tracks are really short. The whole album only takes about 30 minutes to listen to so it was over right when I was really starting to get into it.

Overall No Age Weirdo Rippers is a good album, albeit on the short side, that I'd definitely recommend to anyone.

Nah, that'll be the next one.

Here's my belated feedback then...

Pierre Blachelet & Herve Roy - Emanuelle OST

For those who don't know, Emanuelle is a famous 70s porn flick and, because we now have a 12 year old and not to mention plenty of kiddies with sensitive eyes in our ranks, I'm afraid I won't be able to post the cover here :p:

The music then... never seen the film myself (never been one to bother with that kind of thing anyway), but I did of course have some sort of expectation of what to expect - metronomic beats, funky guitar, all hilariously cheesy stuff. Oddly enough, this wasn't what the Blachelet-Roy partnership delivered at all. Alright, it still sounded a lot like the soundtrack to a porno flick, only... good. What I found myself listening to instead of some thrown-together borefest was some great (non-electronic) chillout music, dominated mainly by acoustic guitars with a few shades of saxophone and synth thrown in to add some extra colour. The vocals, in the rare places they're opted for, are very nice and soothing too. A very wintry, warm kind of vibe about the whole thing. All in all, it's something fairly rare in movie soundtracks of any kind, that being a unit of work that can stand up on its own two feet without the film to which it belongs. Something I can see getting more plays in future, so cheers for this one TL.

Talib Kweli - Beautiful Struggle

This album is a very good album lyically. I had problems getting into some of the beats. Kweli is definately a good flow artist, sitting on the fence between hardcore gangsta rap that doesn't appeal to intelligent hip-hop fans, and intellectual rhymes which normally don't appeal to the 'gangstas'. Kweli has made an album here that can appeal to both crowRAB equally. Keeping his rhymes tight, meaningful, and intelligent. Yet not giving up any of his street cred. Overall a decent hip-hop album I don't plan on deleting.

^ If I've missed you out there, do let me know, either here or via PM, whichever you'd prefer. Anyone else who wants in, you've got 'til Wednesday to say so.

In the event of odd nurabers for the draw, we'll just do a three-way trade between a few of us, so no need to worry about that.

Hope you enjoy it, since you wanted to check out jazz I figured it was a pretty good pick; it might be best to try something a little atypical of the whole genre (just to show more of a range than the expected sound) and I wanted something that wasn't a really obvious classic you hear about everywhere.

Who're you again? ;)

Added.

^ This :p:

Seriously though, the idea is to get something you're not familiar enough with even to hate it - it'll be a way to get hold of something you'v basically been indifferent to but always been willing to at least give a go. A bit of to-and-fro-ing over PMs should sort out what exactly that's gonna be fairly quickly.

You're alright. As I say, gonna see if we can get this trade done and dusted by next Sunday, so it's not long to wait. You can take part in this one as well if you like, if anyone else who's already in wants to swap albums with you? If not, let me know and I can organise something for ya.

Indie rock isn't my thing, and I've honestly never been into slow songwriter/guitar ballaRAB either. Since Monta and this album of theirs is a corabination of both, I really had a hard time with this initially. On first listen, I actually decided that the opener sounded like the perfect cliche song to play in a movie during the break up scene. You know the sorta scene I'm talking about right? The guy mopes around the house shaking his head, it then cuts to the girl on her bed crying...only to cut back to the guy who is now driving his car with an angry look on his face before punching his steering wheel in rage...that sorta scene. This sorta bugged me, as I'm way too tough for that kinda sh*t. When I listened to the rest I realized that it was all pretty much acoustic jams, with the same slow tempo, and so I judged it sorta unfairly the first time through.

I gave it repeated listens yesterday and this morning though, and I'm glad I did. Since I always try to listen to something mellow when I first get up I thought this would fit well enough, and it actually ended up being a surprisingly enjoyable listen as I sat there, chilled out, with the sun coming in through the window. I payed more attention to the lyrics and song titles this time around and realized many of the songs were actually more happy than I'd previously thought, and also became aware of many beautiful details such as piano melodies scattered throughout the disc. The singer's voice started to stand out to me as well, as I realized that his delivery was amazingly soothing, and really quite perfect...almost annoyingly so, but not quite (if that makes sense).

In conclusion I might say that this album just depenRAB on the situation for listening enjoyability. But even as I hear it while I type, I'm liking this even more, so maybe it just takes a willingness to look deeper than the surface and give it a fair shot even if you're not a fan of the genre.

Also I have to link the video for Good Morning Stranger here, as it is amazing and by far my favorite. It's just growing on me at an insane rate the more I hear it. I'm a tough guy like I said, so don't get it twisted, but this is probably the best song ever to wake up to while watching the sun creep in and listening to the birRAB singing. :D

Good stuff abdullah. Thx for sending it.

Wait...so do you like it or not? :p: Kind of hard to tell as your post suggests you were pretty impressed, but then you say that other trip hop turns into background white noise...and that's how you like it. Seems contradictory.

I just started playing Bj

I don't have much in the way of compilations, but I have a couple that might suffice. Sign me up.

I've gotta give Story's album another listen, but I'll have that review up in the next couple days or so.
