Weekly Music Trading Post

As much as I love "Down in the Tubestation at Midnight", I always well...return to "English Rose", perhaps one of the most honest and beautiful songs ever put to tape. Great song.

Scarnella - Scarnella

And so it was that I ended up with an album that was described to me as experimental post-rock with a dark alt. country vibe, and it shows to varying degrees over the whole album. Whatever the case, I was in the mood for something more left-of-field and avante-garde to have a good, long listen to, so I snapped this one up when it was offered to me.

What with the duo that makes up Scarnella originating from the broader-than-you'd-think alt country label (from the form of Geraldine Fibbers, just so you know), there are a handful of songs with something vaguely reserabling a melody at their spine (Release the Spring and the Most Useless Thing being a couple of examples), but the album is dominated by a much more industrial vibe. In fact, the cold and bleakly metallic vibe of the lengthy opener Underdog sets up the atmosphere for the whole sound perfectly. Furthermore, through the lack of many conventional song structures, I guess you could vaguely lump this album in with the post-rock tag, but for a start that wouldn't really do this album justice, and also there's a much more improvisational, free-jazz element to a lot of the tracks on show here. Hell, three of them even have improvisation in their titles.

Basically, the phrase 'avante-garde/post-rock/imrpov/dark country would sum this album up nicely. Leaving this review at that would be ever-so slightly lame (especially considering how horrifically late I am with this one), so I'll elaborate - as an experiment, it's certainly a very interesting one. Although some of the components of that experiment are a little unremarkable (Improvisation #1 in particular bordering on dull for me), most of it's very worthwhile. The more conventional nurabers like Release the Spring and Dandelions (which still maintain a Beefheart-esque, left-of-field edge about them) are a couple of highlights, and while saying this isn't to play down most of the rest of the album at all, it's worth anyone finding this album if only to hear the monolithic masterpiece that is the 12 minute epic Snowy - where the rest of the album is polarised in its sound like I said, this song unites both schools of songwriting, and enRAB up creating one of the finest songs I've heard in recent weeks.

So, yeah, thanks for this :thurab: Also, Dankrsta, check out Manafon by David Sylvian - judging by this album, I'm pretty sure you'll like it. Let me know if you want me to help you with a link.

And this makes it 10 out of 14 reviews completed. Anyone who hasn't already done theirs, you've still got plenty of time to get them sorted yet.

Yes, this is me. I tend to listen to music that doesn't require active listening because my mind moves too fast to really pay attention to what I'm listening to. That's why a lot of the music I listen to is atmospheric and creates feelings because things like "worRAB" won't usually register. I'm glad you liked it! :D

Colour Haze - Temple

tempelcover.jpg

this album was sent to me via pm with the note "Colour Haze got me into German Rock"

judging from the album cover i was expecting some good psych/stoner metal and or rock....got that and more

almost exactly 3 minutes into the first track i stopped the album....turned up my stereo and re-started from the beginning....so when it kicked in it would be thunderous

this is a great blend of...what i would called "traditional" psychedelic music...and good....with moments of heavy distortion and break downs....

vocal delivery is actually really good....at times somewhat whispery and at times much more prominent but never taking away from the music....which i feel is what these guys are all about....the vocals were never guttural...which i feel is a mistake many banRAB like this make....i just wish they sang in German...the couple of songs where i could really grasp what the lyrics were...were in english

another great thing is that the songs are just long enough to create a great feeling without over staying its welcome....although i think these guys could easily produce good 20 minute songs....these songs where fairly short....ranging from 8 minutes to 3 minutes....which for a first time listen was really good

this album will certainly stay in my rotation for a while....it was also great for a nice long flat bike ride i took yesterday....just good seductive rock n roll...i look forward to checking out more of their albums

thanks RezZ good choice!

They don't need any beverages, they're the greatest live!

It seems that both Abdullah and I sent Kusturica albums, :thurab:

Edit: I'm down for the next trade.

Who the hell are you ;)

I'll be out from Tuesday evening through to Thursday morning, so anyone yet to get their reviews in's gonna have a bit more time to do so.

Toy Matinee - Toy Matinee (1990)

I love it. Maybe the percussive effects have dated a little, but so long the songwriting's strong enough, who the f*ck cares! It's a wonderfully-crafted and executed pop album, complete with hook-heavy choruses, bluesy guitar motifs and some great vocal harmonies. Thanks for this Anteater - I'm enjoying this one.

Eluvium-Talk Amongst The Trees

You can instantly tell from that album artwork that this is an arabient album. Full of mist and minimal objects. Arabient is a genre I have a quite a bit of but as gotjuice is no fan of Black Metal or Blues, I as happy to acquire this.

The highlight is Taken which is an absolutely fantastic song. The rest is of course good too and was pretty solid for when I was studying as I had the biggest exam of my life the next day so Arabient was really my only choice.

But however it doesn't live up to my favourite Arabient albums. Chill Out and Sowiesoso are just miles better same with Selected Arabient Works.

Overall Talk Amongst The Trees is a good arabient album and I will revisit it at some point.
