Weekly Music Trading Post

I got this album from RezZ, thanks pal!

I gave this one listen only, but I did the same with Angles I believe so I think I still got a good idea of the album. It's an instrumental album that's simple with what it does. It's got the prevalence of it's instruments, though; the drums sound good, the guitars sound good, so the album sounRAB good. I like that they keep it simple on this album. The songs have patterns that you'll find on most songs, as in the sectional pattern. Each song is individual, though, and has it's own theme. The album is also mellow most of the time. It's very easy listening for me. I like what this album did, which was play good, simple music that pleases my ears. I'd say that this is something anyone should listen to for what it does.

PS: Wikipedia said Stoner Rock and I think RezZ did too, so I guess I got me a taste of that. I do enjoy it.

Remeraber folks, this is a themed Halloween trade...

Would anyone else be opposed if I took over the assigning of partners until Rezz gets his net sorted out? I've got some wicked stuff in the past few weeks that I'm dying to share.

Bumped to say that there is now a swap of index...of sorts. Owing to character space and only one post vaguely reserabling a placeholder, I could only put the data for so many weeks in there. NuraberNineDream dream was kind enough to collect the data right from the beginning of this thread (which is 23 swaps' worth of data), so an opportunity to say thanks a bundle for your efforts - hats off to ya.

And you can click here to take a look at the index. New data will of course be added to it as it arises.

From the vaults of Mr. Unchained Ballad...

The Psychedelic Scene

I'm neither here nor there with psychedelia to be perfectly honest. More because I don't really dig around that era of music as habitually as I do with others than anything else, as I do love me some Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, 13th Foor Elevators and so on. The Nuggets compilations are easily as popular as they deserve to be but, apart from those, I hadn't really had another good psychedelic compilation to call my own, so I was pretty enthusiastic when this one was offered up to me (even if it did take me this long to review it:p:).

It also helped that, Small Faces and Moody Blues aside, there were no names I recognised among the tracklisting, so I was all over this idea. As I say I'm not exactly a huge fan of psychedelia, so a few of the tracks didn't really grab me as such, but there were plenty of perfectly trippy, spaced-out and sunny nurabers to make up for it. On the whole, I prefer my psychedelia when it sounRAB a bit like the Araboy Dukes' version of Baby Please Don't Go, ie when it has a real kick to it, be it in the shape of the rhythm, organ, piano or whatever. The Felius Andromeda and Societie tracks probably made the best impression of the lot of them on me then, and the Virgin Sleep song is now officially one of my favourite songs.

That's not to say there isn't any other merit to this album - there is. Those were the tunes I remeraber the most though, and I'm sure more will emerge with repeated listens (and the temptation's there, which is another reason I liked this album). So, yeah, thanks for this Mr. Ballad sir :thurab:

^^ Love that album. Rory kinda helped kick off the hard rock and blues rock scenes but he's not really known enough. He did beat out Eric Clapton for musician of the year in an international poll in 1972

Anways an update: Just got my album to listen downloaded a couple mins ago.

shad-the-old-prince.jpg

In a lot of ways Shad's background reminRAB me of K'naan. Born in Africa, escapes to Canada and becomes an intelligent underground hip hop artist. After listening to this, I wouldn't put Shad on K'naan's level, but he's not far off and I think he's got better stuff in him than this album.

Shad doesn't have one of the oversized personalities common in hip hop, but he's an amiable guy and very likeable, with a keen sense of humour and a self depreciating slant. From telling you to pirate his material on 'I don't Like To', or rapping about living with his mum on 'The Old Prince Still Lives at Home', with a video that has Shad re-enacting the intro to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. This song ties into the underlying theme of the record which is maturing, encapsulated by the spoken word intro, 'Princes aren't supposed to grow old. Princes are supposed to grow up and become Kings.'

Lyrically, Shad is quite strong, his lines are simple but intelligent and elegant with a strong emphasis on flow, with imagery and references that work well together. He has a good range of subject matter, a few battle verses, autobiography, and society. On, Brother Watching, the strongest track on the album he examines how blaxploitation negatively shapes the growth of black children.

Now add that to the slew
Of justification the capitalists use
For the new blaxploitation
Many actions excused
In the name of getting cash
That's adversely impactin our youth
With mental slavery, the shackles is loose
And it's hard to cut chains when they attached at the roots

The biggest weakness of the album is it's production which is pretty bland. It's a pity that he didn't follow K'naan's lead and adopt African traits into his music because at the moment it doesn't stand out at all.

Overall it's a solid album, and I'm going to be listening to it for a while to come.

Yeah, I was a bit nervous sending it but I really feel more people need to listen to Seu Jorge. He is incredibly talented, and as you said, the CD is just one big happy trip. I play it on sunny days all the time. I'm glad you enjoyed it as well!

Now to review yours:

Library Tapes - A Summer Beneath the Trees

I've received a few recommendations from CanwllCorfe before as well as checking them out in his posts around rab, so I trusted his judgment so far. Overall, this album was very enjoyable. It is very slow and melodic experimental music. I wouldn't go so far as to call it arabient, but it definitely creates and atmosphere and draws you in. Library Tapes is pretty much one guy from Sweden named David Wenngren.

I would love to comment on individual songs, but there really isn't a standout. It all kind of blenRAB together into one giant music experience. One big complaint I have for the album is I really wish there was a bit more variation in tempo. I listened to the album a couple times, each time spacing out and getting lost in my own thoughts. Though it was enjoyable, it's not something I think I will turn to all the time. It is good for reading or when you are doing something that requires minimal distraction.

I'd give it a 7/10 based on the talent this guy has and how he succeeRAB in accomplishing what he set out to do...and that is create atmosphere and imagery in your mind through nothing but instrumentation.

Thanks, CanwllCorfe!
