Weekly Music Trading Post

^^That's a beautiful review Phanastasio. I'm so glad that Ghost Sonata hit the right notes for you. And you were worried about reviewing it sooner? I still have one more album to review for NuraberNine (we traded two this previous trade) before I move on to yours :(. But I did listen to your album and it's right up my alley. I'll try to write a review in a couple of days.

^ Good to see another review. That makes it only 2 more to come in. If whoever's still due to type something about their album up here could do so, it'd be awesome if we could feedback on every album before starting the new trade.

Well, industrial in the sense that the album reminde me of Einsturzende Neubauten who, incidentally, I haven't listened to in waaaaay too long. The whole album sounded like some industrial form of jazzy post-rock to me...or at least the longer cuts did.

Also, I doubt you'll have much trouble finding a link, but I'm here if you need one. If all you've heard of David Sylvian is his work with Japan or Secrets Of the Beehive, be prepared for something hella different - Manafon has that same industrial/jazzy vibe I talked about in the review to it, so it's something you might quite dig.

No problem story...glad you enjoyed it.

anticipation sent me The Furthur Adventures of Lord Quas: Quasimoto

I really enjoyed the album. It had a really nice underground hiphop vibe all the way through and seeing that it's from madlib I'm surprised I never heard it before. My only criticism is the immense nuraber of skits throughout the album but the quality of the songs more than made up for that in my opinion.

If you're a hiphop fan and you haven't heard it yet go check it out. I guarantee that's a decision you won't regret.

So much for that eh.

Sure.

I've been thinking this thing could do with a bit of a break, so it's on hiatus 'til next week. Plus, I'd feel bad starting another without reviewing the albums I've got. Starting tomorrow I've got a three-week break from uni, so I'll be able to put more thought into matters then. I've listened to both albums once so far, so I'll give them another spin before reviewing them.

Anyway, if anyone wants to take part in the next trade, just say so here and I'll get the next one started sometime over the next week.

Andrew Bird - Noble Beast

I was fairly interested to listen to this album once story sent me this thing since acoustic singer/songwriters are something I really love. A Chicago native, Andrew Bird is was trained from a young age on the violin. Early in his career, he did some collaborative work with the Squirrel Nut Zippers. This made me very excited since I happen to love the Squirrel Nut Zippers. His first band Bowl of Fire released a few albums to little commercial success and disbanded in 2003. After this, it was all solo time. Eventually, his style would shift from a full backing band to his more acoustic work of Noble Beast (released early 2009).

That is where I come in. The first song, "Oh No", was right up my alley. Nothing too groundbreaking, just a really solid acoustic based pop song. Sadly, this was easily my favorite song on the album. That really bugs me. If you have one intensely strong track, save it for the middle or something. The next song "Masterswarm" is also a fairly good song, and left me with high hopes for some strong tracks like that first one. Alas, it was not to be. The rest of the album can best be described as "typical". It isn't bad, it just didn't strike me as anything other than "Oh hey, acoustic music". When I go for acoustic singer/songwriter music, I go for it because of the raw emotion involved in writing it. You either have to do something incredibly intriguing and original, or you better be prepared to make me cry. This is why Elliott Smith will always be the supreme commander of all things singer/songwriter in my eyes.

The album wasn't without its decently catchy moments, however. "Tenuousness" and "Not a Robot, But a Ghost" were pretty good and as I said, none of the songs were really bad. Actually, I'm listenign to "Not a Robot, But a Ghost" again right now and I'm enjoying it far more than I remeraber. For that, I give the album a 6/10. Maybe in a different time I would have rated it higher, but after you hear Elliott Smith...there is just no going back.

Thanks, story!

Good stuff. Welcome to the throng :D

Remeraber people, the theme for the next trade is melancholy, ie contemplative, down-tempo and/or down-in-the-dumps albums we'll all be looking for next week.

oh i thought you were the one controlling this. sorry. i'll send the link to Pobodys Nerfect

FaSho, can you reply so i can get my link back? Please

They actually were reunited for the last time in 2005, to release their third official album, entitled A plus tard crocodile. A lot of favourites in that one also.

Btw, is there some kind of intended pun in the bolded part?

 ! You liar that lies! I did! You sent me Seu Jorge's album.. Cru I believe? I don't recall much of my review but I do remeraber thinking it was quite a sunny summer album.
