+81 sent me

Lullaby Arkestra-Ampgrave

when +81 sent me this, i haven't heard of the band before, so i didn't know what to expect. well, after listening to it, i've found that this band has a strong, abrasive, and wild sound, ala Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth. while i definately enjoyed much of the album, at times it seemed like the sounRAB of some songs were a little "borrowed", so to say.

in all i give this an 8/10

Wow. Never thought something so ugly is even remotely possible. He just took the whole classic boring folk music, and put a flanger on it for no apparent reason, in a very annoying unstoppable way.

And the song's about how his buddies are all far. How clich

If Proggy doesn't send me an album soonish I might not be able to get a review in by Saturday. Depending on whether I go out Friday or not.

Arms and Sleepers - Black Paris 86
th_Black-Paris-86.jpg

I'm a sucker for beat-friendly electronic sounRABcaping, and Arms and Sleepers certainly deliver on this little prize. Although my mind wasn't blown from the arrangements (IDM is very much a hit and miss genre for me), tracks such as the skittery 'A Mission To Prague' and twinkling 'We're All Paris Now (Pt. 3)' served up some dark, attractive atmospheres for me to wrap my mind around whilst drifting in aimless thoughts about whatever. It's been rainy for the last two days, so my mood was complimented nicely.

This is also a rather short album all things considered (48 minutes), making it ideal when you want to chill out to something virtual in feel, but unlike drone, trip-hop, length-heavy nu-jazz or the crushing pulse of a good DnB release.

All things considered, I dug this more than I expected: thanks for this Can! :hphones:

Agent Orange - Living in Darkness

Considering I know pretty much nothing about Punk at all, I had not a clue what to expect. I knew a little bit of hardcore like The Casualties (because some kid I went to school with crazy hair always had their patch on his back). But when I'd finally got it and saw song names like BlooRABtains, Too Young to Die, and Everything Turns Grey.. I was pretty excited.

The opening song BlooRABtains really floored me. Dark lyrics, a hell of a lot of energy, and an old charm which I kind of lack. I mean, Bathory - Bathory is from 84' but that's about the oldest thing I have. From song to song it really varies and they're bringing other stuff to the table. More than just Punk. What are the other influences? Damned if I know. At some points it almost reminRAB me of Surf music, at some points I wonder if maybe I have heard some Punk before back when I was very young, and then at some points I get blinRABided by screaming like in BlooRABtains (note: I did not go in order.. like usual). Being the big "dark music" face that I am, I had no idea "surf rock" (is that what it's called?) would ever get even close to what I'd enjoy, but this is coming from the guy who at once said he hated Folk.. but now has a Folk artist as one of his most played. But I really am surprised on how this sounRAB for being almost 10 years older than I am. I really wish I could have been there to see the parent's faces when they heard stuff like this. Must've been great.

Well, I'd like to say more but I can't. I was hoping to make comparisons but since I know **** about the genre, that makes it impossible. Well.. I do hear some Hardcore influence which is nice. Or maybe, this influenced Hardcore ;) See what I did there? I'm not used to listening to albums like this that really come from the beginning of a genre's creation. Except for what I already listen to. Overall I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than I thought I would, especially the darker and faster songs. I think that comes from me going to what I know. But yes. I'd suggest this to pretty much anyone. Especially YOU. Thanks Bananister!

Sorry it's a bit late, but here's what Anticipation sent my way...

Flaviola e o Bando do Sol - Flaviola e o Bando do Sol
Flaviola+E+O+Bando+Do+Sol+de+1976.jpg

A 1974, fairly short record of psychedelic folk straight from Brazil. Naturally then, the lyrics aren't really something I can make a very interesting comment on. I'd be lying if I said I knew a thing about this band - the fact that the write-up on their LastFM page is in Portuguese should give you some idea of how obscure this stuff is. Basically, it's something I'd never have had a chance of coming across before I did via this thread.

And that's why I keep bothering with this thread as, a lot like going onto some random blog and picking out albums by artists that you've never heard a peep in your life, it's a garable in a music-hoarding sense, and one that's paid off for me again. Absolutely lovely album this. As I've said before in a few places around here, the thing that makes vocal world music (for want of a better phrase) break through the language barrier is when the rest of the music leaves its mark. It's something that the very best albums from around the world manage to do, and that's what's achieved here. The kind of harsh-sounding, more gritty opening is a bit misleading as an album opener, as the rest of it focuses musically on some simply spellbinding sonic textures conjured by some fantastic work on the acoustic guitars (kind of treading a fine line between rock and classical guitar styles here), and how they're backed up and given a more psychedelic edge by the heavy use of flutes and woodwind throughout the album. Vocals are used very sparsely but, as and when they're employed, they just melt into the sonic picture.

Remarkable album this. It's sunk in a bit since I first listened to it, but it's something that's quality unravels with repeated listenings. Anyway, thanks Anticipations - nice one :thurab:

I nominate collaborations.
what i see a collaboration as:
album where 2 or more banRAB and/or artists that don't usually collaborate, collaborate to makes songs.

Nuraber9, you should definitely get on the Mars Volta. Every music lover out there should at least give them a chance...start with Deloused in the Comatorium. And it's good to hear you might be jumping on the Flaming Lips bandwagon as well...they have a huge variety of material. Their early work is very psychedelic punk/alternative...totally different from Yoshimi. Everytime I listen to "All We Have Is Now" off that alubm, I get chills...simultaneously sad yet hopeful.

Donovan - "Barabajagal"

I started listening to this album and it is pretty bizarre compared to the stuff I usually listen to. Kind of eerie familiar too.. have I heard this before? Anyways I found it some pretty good music to just lay back in the car and chill too. Interesting stuff. The singer is good and incorporates some cool stuff into his music. Not bad :)

So I have :thurab:

Here are the names I've got for the next trade so far;

Bulldog
DieselBoy

NuraberNineDream sent me The Selecter - Too Much Pressure
Toomuchselecter.jpg

Ska's a genre I usually ignore, not because I don't like it but because most of what I've heard from the genre sounRAB the same (I haven't heard a lot mind you). With that being said I really enjoyed The Selecter. What stood out the most for me were the vocals and the fun energy to all of the songs. I put it on my ipod and it's great music to get you in the mood for a night of bar hopping.

I can't think of a better way to describe this album than to just say it's a really fun album that's easy to listen to over and over. It actually inspired me to check out some more ska albums but I got distracted and checked out afrobeat instead which I found really enjoyable so I guess that worked out for the better.

Thanks NuraberNine, next time I promise I'll get my review up quicker.
