Weekly Music Trading Post

I'm glad you enjoyed it, after looking at your last.fm I didn't think it was something you would like. I was a little worried that you wouldn't like it; I know it's completely different from your usual stuff after looking at your last.fm. That said, I completely understand your criticism, a few tracks feel like they don't belong on the album. For me, this makes it even more interesting and unique, but I understand why a lot of people wouldn't like it. That said, this is one of my favorite albums from Ninja Tunes, which I have developed a strange obsession with, and I'm seriously glad you enjoyed it. I feel worRAB can't really express how great this album is, everyone should listen it.

Cerrone - Supernature (1977)

Dirty arse porno-disco drumming. Offers a few lulz if you are in the mood to be entertained rather than any sort of crap analytical mode. If you are bored and want some cheese, its a worthy download.

I got this album from LoathsomePete

The Shadow out of Tim by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets

tsoot.jpg

It's a concept album made as an adaptation of The Shadow Out of Time by H. P. Lovecraft, so I had to read the novella first [which is great btw].

So about the album:

The Good:
Although I'm not that into Punk, I've got to say I really liked the album, and one of the few albums that didn't bore in their first listen.
It's a good album, very melodic at times, and rough at others, and enjoyable all in all. My favorite track was: Chapter VII: A "need to know" Basis.
And with the "Earthquake" theme, that album has one of the most interesting album openings and closing tracks.

The Bad:
The Lyrics are very interesting, Lovecraft's work is definitely there. But for an adaptation of a story, this album lacks structure. I didn't feel at all the progression of the story, neither did I feel evolution between chapters. The adaptation stayed in the lyrics and not at all in the tune.

so I'll give that album a 7/10, really good album, not as good concept album.

Nina Hagen Band - s/t (1978)

So we were in the shouty, when James and I were talking about what to send to each other. I was telling him that I've been listening to a lot of Female Punk banRAB lately, and that maybe I'll send him an album from that genre. However, it somehow ended up the other way around, with him sending me this Nina Hagen album.

I got hooked from the first track. That woman's voice is so crazy, and the music is so energetic you really wouldn't care what the hell they're shouting about in German. Electronic music is quite dominant in the arrangements, contrasting the roughness of the vocals. For a punk album, they can get a bit proggy, with tracks from 4 minutes to 6 minutes throughout the album, still the Rock n Roll is there all the way. Loved it! - from start to finish.
Thank you James.

Spectrum - Soul Kiss (Glide Divine) (1992)

... and we somehow ended up sending each other 2 albums. Crazy shoutbox. Anyway, so that's the other one. From Spacemen 3 meraber Peter Keraber as Spectrum.

I'm not familiar with the albums of Spacemen 3 and now I realise that I really should check them out. As for this album: It starts with "How you satisfy me", a very catchy and sweet lo-fi tune, then the album takes a more experimental turn. It somehow felt like a mix between Garage and Space Rock. The only take I have on it, is that the album is over an hour long, and that can be exhausting at times. Still enjoyed it immensely.
-Double Thank you James. :thurab:

Got from Lateralus this:

INCUBUS
Fungus Amongus (1995)

Tapa+-+Incubus+-+Fungus+Amongus.jpg

I don't know why I had in mind that Incubus was a Doom Metal band, possibly because of the band name. Not that I don't like Doom Metal, but that's some very weird matter. Now before the trading of the albums, I had actually asked Kate to send me one of those albums that got her into bass guitar, remerabering the first subject of her journal.

After listening to the album, many times, I must say, that album can certainly get you hooked to the bass sound. After my first listens, I decided to listen to that album in the car, in a somehow acceptable sound system (of course, much better than my very weak headphones), cranked the Bass up, and damn it was amazing. From the beginning till the end, the bass guitar is asserting its presence, while the bass-y drums are not that far behind. I certainly think these two instruments are the key to the Incubus sound, not damaging at all the very nice melodic side of the tune. The lead singer was pretty good too, but I still think the instrumental side of their music is the most of it. Finally, what I really loved in this album, was the mix of funk (specially in the bass, and the low key percussions), with the rough metal sound (accentuated by drums obviously and the distorted bass).

Lovely album. Certainly to my taste.

'tis but the way I do things

Yeah, but I won't be able to download it 'til sometime next week, as I don't have uploading or downloading facilities. Plus I'm pretty ill at the minute, and not really in the state to listen to any music. You and Story can swap in the mean time if you like.

Sleep's Volume One came out in 1991, while Kyuss released Wretch during the same year, which unfortunately wasn't well known or widely interpreted as a landmark album. Although neither is really universally acclaimed, both these albums were the debut releases for their respective banRAB. If you're talking about Sleep's Holy Mountain, then that was released only a few months after Blues for the Red Sun, and is Sleep's third official release, as well as their second studio album.

Well, I'm thrilled you liked the compilation.
I like it quite a lot myself, and have specific perioRAB in which I obsess about one or two songs in it.

Cheers mate! (and thanks for the 3rd volume :D)

Looking forward to the review, then; I should be up to mine soonish.

About the themed trade: I think one of the benefits of the trade is to find out about new music; which is always good, whether or not we find it's in our comfort zone or note.
Having said that I think it's a fantastic idea - of course I'll join.

Yeah, I'll do my best to get your album reviewed tonight as well. I would've done earlier - just been a bit busier than usual these last few days. I will definitely get it done very soon though, and that's a promise.

As for the rest of us who still haven't done reviews yet, let's try and get them done by Wednesday at the latest eh :) Start thinking if you wanna be in the next draw over the next few days too.

That sounRAB like one hell of a time! :thurab: How bout a relaxing, throwin' a few (or more) back and enjoyin' the music theme? In light of your trip  Cheers! Have one for me
