Weekly Music Trading Post

Just something I thought about half a minute ago, so feel free to shoot it down if it's that bad, but how what would anyone think of a compilation-themed swap for the next round? Officially-released ones only of course, whether by one artist or varying ones on the same disc.

If I remeraber correctly, it was the album with these songs on it...

'twas all an awfully long time ago though. Dunno how your situation is when it comes to downloading stuff, but if you can actually do that (I remeraber you saying something about your uni not allowing such things) I'll send the link along again.

I'm in!
I don't really know how this works apart from two folks sending each other an album to review. I'm guessing Bulldog assigns the partners on a random basis? I can dig it.

I'm glad you liked it, that's surely one of the many hidden gems of the 60s (was mentioned by Molecules in the 60s thread, so my thanks to him :D), and it's an album that never ceases to please. Even five of my frienRAB have requested this album after hearing few parts in my car.

It was nice trading with you :p:

Will try to get it, and I think I'll most surely check some of the videos on youtube. I've been a fan of Nick Cave long before I heard any of his original songs or owning any of his albums. It was simply after seeing him on tv, in a concert, that I got instantly fascinated. And till these days, I enjoy immensely seeing him outside the boundaries of a studio album.

So then, NuraberNineDream sent me...

Louise Attaque - Comme on a Dit

...which is the second (and, to my knowledge, last) official studio album from the French four-piece Louise Attaque. They formed in Paris the late 90s, became fairly popular (again, to my admittedly limited knowledge) in their native France and, judging by this album, peddled a sound that I suppose you could describe as chanson rock. Basically a bit of a heavier (in the majority of places) form of folk-rock then, with a few slower, more quiet and contemplative moments to balance things out. It was pretty impressive stuff overall, and something I felt I needed for the fact that I own barely any French music myself, so this has given me a little bit of a leg up - a starting point from which to delve a bit deeper. Musically, as I say, Comme on a Dit has its vocal parts sung entirely in French but, as with the best of music sung in a language I can't understand all that well, if the music itself is nice and well-thought and engaging enough, such things take a back seat. That's basically what the deal is with Louise Attaque here, as the prominent use of the fiddle does a lot to add some very nice colours to the proceedings, whatever tempo we're talking about. Hard to pick out favourites seeing as it's early days for me and this album, but the closing La Ballade de Basse is pretty majestic. Tout Passe and Pour un Oui, Pour un Non were other standouts.

Anyway, ta for this. Much appreciated :thurab:

I'll post the next round of swap partners fairly soon too...

From Trace87...

Deerhunter - Microcastle
deerhunter-microcastle-300x300.jpg

Shoegaze isn't exactly something I listen to a lot of/have a lot of patience for, so of the albums I was offered I asked for Microcastle here, just because I've seen a fairly active thread about it in the New Releases forum and raved elsewhere as well, so I thought I'd give it a go. Not bad at all, and certainly something I can see myself getting back to. On the livelier tracks like Nothing Ever Happened there are some interesting juxtapositions between catatonic kinRAB of rhythms and the heavy distortions and feedback on the guitars that dominate the longer instrumental passages, making for some good results to say the least. The album shined best for me with the slower, quieter trio at the centre of the tracklisting - the title track, Calvary Scars and Green Jacket. Overall though it's a solid unit of work.

So, yeah, thanks Trace.

From dankrsta:

Suicide (1977) - Suicide

suicide-suicide_b-400x400.jpg

So dankrsta sent me the debut album by the American electronic protopunk musical duo, Suicide. Another album that needed the right push to get me to listen to it.

Surprisingly, the album is very easy to listen to. Not a "grower", as I had expected, and I loved it the second I put it on. It's the industrial monotonous daunting sound that caught my attention. The songs vary from dynamic, like the opening track Ghost Rider to the somehow sweet, Cheree, which is all the variation I need to stay in the mood for more musak!

All the songs in there are good. I don't find myself fighting my urges to skip any given track, which is always good news. Still, the one that truly stanRAB out for me, or haunts me in other worRAB, was obviously Frankie Teardrop. It beats watching a gore movie at night! This guy's screams sound like the screeches of a cat getting its skin peeled off of its body! Damn I loved it!!
So I think that's enough exclamation marks for one single song. So thank you for that great album D...

Happy Nightmare Baby (1987) - Opal

opal%2Bhappy.jpg

So we had a double trade, and here's the second album dankrsta sent me, the debut by Psychedelic band Opal.
I really loved that one too. It's like all my favourite 60s banRAB got together, and gave birth to an 80s band. It all sounRAB so familiar yet very different. And the album is strangely homogeneous though it varies from Garage, to Psych then Folk... I haven't written any review in while, so I'm at a loss of worRAB right now, so all I'm going to say, that I loved every track on this album, but I still haven't spotted my favourites.

Double thanks D.

bob.'s review will be next. Hopefully soon. And I apologize for my tardiness, again.

OK here's the list for this week, I ended up rolling some of my 10 sided dice to choose the partners so it's a non biased list.
