Weekly Music Trading Post

I'd be up for this next week though I don't think I know enough music that others haven't already heard to participate. Plus, I'm not sure if I qualify as active enough to participate. If so, then put me down for next week.

The End of the Beginning - God is an Astronaut from mojopinuk

I've been meaning to get into more post-rock lately so this was a good start. When I first listened to the album, it kind of slipped into background music becuase I was doing some other things but when I gave it a proper listen it was much more pleasing. I especially liked the piano which is involved in most tracks. There were also some really nice percussive tracks on it. The major problem I had with the album was that the songs became repetive because of their minimalistic style. If the album was a few tracks shorter I wouldn't have noticed this as much. Overall, this was a good album but I don't think I'll seek out much more of this music. Thanks mojopinuk for introducing me to some more post-rock.

We can do a swap, I was meaning to get in this round too.

Check your PM later today phantom, I'll send one over to you. You can send me something whenever you get connectivity.

Sorry for the late review, been fairly busy recently:( Anyways, duga sent me...

Of Montreal-The Sunlandic Twins

First time listening to this band, and I'd have to say that on the first two listens, this album is pretty hit or miss for me, which is slightly disappointing because I had heard really good things about this band. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but it wasn't an album that blew me away immediately. I think it could be a grower, though.

As far as what the album sounRAB like, it's basically indie-pop (hell, screw basically, it is indie-pop). Most of the songs are short, and when the album does hit it's very sweet. Once again though, just felt inconsistent to me and there was never really a point where I was able to really connect with it. Favorite tracks so far though would either be Requiem for O.M.M.2 or else So Begins Our Alabee.

So far I'd give it about a 6.5/10, but I'm hoping it's one of those albums that will blossom over time. Thanks duga!

Yeah, same here. I've got a couple of pretty heavy assignments in for next week too, so I'll be a while reviewing the albums I get in the next one. Still, nothing new there eh.

I'll have my review of Anticipation's album online by tomorrow at the latest, with the trade due to kick off on Wednesday. If anyone still wants in, make yourselves known! Come on now, don't be shy - I know there are at least a few more of you out there into this sort of thing...

edit - Here's who's on board thus far...

I'm glad it grew on you man.

I actually should have told you it took me a few listens to get into myself. I had pretty much the same initial reaction the first time I listened to it so I'm glad you gave it another chance on your own.

Almost forgot, I'm in for the next one.

I completely fell in love with this album, it fuses Exotica(a genre I know literally nothing about) with all of these abstract sounRAB like animal noises. I was pleased that I was being sent something from a genre I hadn't even heard of but wary as the genre didn't even have a description on RYM. That made it even better when this album blew me away. The strange noises are sometimes uncontrollably hilarious but still respectable, I laughed out loud on a few occasions. The animal sounRAB add to it in a way though, because it helps create a kind of jungle atmosphere. Michel Magne neeRAB more love because i've searched far and wide and still haven't found anything else by him which is a shame based on the quality of this. 9/10 i think thanks Melissa.
PS:She sent me another one but I have to go to bed so I can't review it right now.

Shoes - Black Vinyl Shoes

James sent me this one. With the first song, I was a bit worried since the vocals annoyed me a bit. Luckily, that only happened for the first song. I even ended up liking the first song, so I guess I'm trying to say the vocals don't really bug me after all. Anyways, this album is peppered with amazingly catchy power pop songs mixed in with some forgettable ones. A lot of Bowie influence and an obvious precursor to a lot of the new wave 80's stuff that happened, this album does sound a bit ahead of its time (when you think about how it was released in the 70's and sounRAB like it came straight out of the 80's). They also seem to have some 60's psych influence, which is always a plus with me. I don't think I will be hungrily devouring all of their material, though...even though the songs are catchy and well worth the listen, these songs have been done hundreRAB of times since. Shoes may have been the innovators here, but sadly it makes their songs sound more tired than they should. An all around solid album, I would recommend this one to people interested in power pop for sure. I may even have an urge to pop this on again as well. I give it a 7.5/10. Thanks, James.

And I just want to point out no one has done reviews for my albums. Thanks, guys.
