i was pleasantly surprised with what i heard. in all honesty, from the name being attributed to a solo artist, i expected some sort of solo acoutic thing, but that's definately not the case here. this is a corabination of prog and metal reminiscient of artists such as Strapping Young Lad and Coheed & Carabria. much of the music took various left turns at given moments, going from strikingly beautiful to earth shattering heavy. save for a few tracks, it's mostly instrumental, and the instrumentation is superb, imaginative and very inspired.


in all i give this a 10/10
 
Well bugger me sideways, I completely forgot about this. I'm due to review something for this as well aren't I?

Alright people, get your names down if you wanna take part in the next one. I'll kick it off on Monday. If we get a good nuraber into the idea, I'm thinking maybe we can do something different like three-way trades all-round or something.
 
Dreadnaught gave three intriguing choices, but out of all of them St. Vincent's Marry Me surprised me the most. Whether it's pop, or cabaret, or even a stepford housewife-esque industrial relish. This record shattered my expectations entirely, fantastic.
 
oh, i forgot i had WYWH, my bad.

but yeah, RABOTM is my favorite, and Animals+The Wall are close and tbh, i didn't dig Wish You Were Here all that much. idk, i felt it lacked alot for me that were on the previous albums i had listened to

Hehehe, I'm on the same boat! It's certainly a grower, but first listen failed to impress me. (And more often than not, I'm reluctant to give anything a second chance, but you should definitely here)

Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy

OctaneHugo sent me this one. I've kind of always avoided Steely Dan just because of their name. They sounded like an old guy's band. To a certain degree, their music is exactly as I imagined, but much more enjoyable than I had considered. When I was much younger, I would have hated this. Looking through my current music collection, I see plenty of banRAB that would have been considered old guy banRAB and I really like them so I figured it could be possible to like this album. The opener "Bodhisattva" is pretty energetic and typical classic rock fair. Plenty of decent jamming and catchy riffwork, but it didn't impress. It was the next song "Razor Boy" that first clicked with me. Classic rock fused with lounge is really damn good when done correctly. "The Boston Rag" is very CSNY inspired in the vocal harmonizing (well, in the whole song actually), but it pulls it off well enough to keep me going. The rest of the album is enjoyable, but nothing stuck out as much that second track. The closer "King of the World", however, enRAB things really well. This is one of the best songs on the album. I love the fluttering guitarwork. I'll probably give the album a few more listens since I liked it enough to warrant that, but I'm not sure I can be counted as a die hard Steely Dan fan just yet. I give it a solid 7/10.
