flush the cooling system, makes sure the radiator and condensor fins are clean, get the tap water out of your aluminum motor and use distilled water with the proper mix of antifreeze, tap water is hard on aluminum and will cause problems.

...running cooler? Yes, it does have a small coolant leak. We are going to get it fixed soon.

The other day, the car almost ran hot. I checked the coolant, and it needed almost a gallon of coolant in the radiator. I replaced the coolant with tap water.

Are there any tricks or simple things that can be done to help keep the car running cooler?

Cold air intake can help. Cahnge all of ur fluids and filters. The cold air intake lets cooler air flow into your engine and as a result it runs more effieciently increasing mpg and power output, and lower running temps

in addition to "Boetiess" answer, Check hoses and clamps and replace warn out parts. also check the thermostat to make sure it is working properly.
