my 16 yr old son has been suffering for 2 yrs now. he did take antibiotics for a while and the results were amazing! but now its doing nothing! so we have tried the face scrubs cutting our fooRAB anitbiotics and the usual cleaning and nothing is working and now its very very bad! red swollen and such, are there any things on the market that could help or home made things at least to make it more bearable?

I had moderate acne since I was 14 also. I am now 21 years old and still suffer from mild acne occasionaly. I regret not ever getting on accutane, but I always thought my acne would stop once i graduated highschool WRONG!. I would definitely not recommend using very many chemical products because they will not help prevent acne, but only heal exisitng acne.

Because you must heal acne internally not externally here are some things that will definitely help after 7 years of experience:

Make sure he drinks half his body weight in ounces of water everyday.
Does NOT drink any soda, or non-natural juice (including gatorade, apple juice etc) I can't stress that enough and it will minimize cystic acne drastically.

Minimizing dairy and wheat will also help minimize breakouts.
Exercising daily and making sure he washes his face right after because sweat is a bacteria's best friend. (helps with stress too which is a big factor)

But overall, From 7 years of having acne i would tell him not to let acne take over his life, my advice is to go on accutane. Find the right doctor that will watch him carefully and knows what he is doing and in 5 months from now he will have a much happier life. Also, if his acne starts up again in a few years after accutane the 2nd time on it is a breeze. The risks are worth it and he should defintely enjoy his junior and senior years.
However, you can also do it by strict dieting, disipline, and time, but it really takes enjoyment and fun out of the highschool days which you only live once and i regret it huge. I am going on accutane for mild accutane very soon.

EXPERIENCE.

Definitely go ahead and try accutane, I know it works for a lot of people. Be warned, however, that it is not guaranteed! I tried it during high school and it really made my senior year miserable. All Accutane did for me is make my skin the worst it had EVER been the entire time I was on it...I was absolutely miserable. When it was over, my skin stayed relatively clear for maybe 3 months tops. It does have a lot of risks, but it is certainly something to try once you've reached the "wits end" point.

For me, cutting out all chemical skin products has done wonders. My skin isn't perfect and I still get occasional breakouts, but switching to organic products has cleared it up dramatically. A tea tree oil face wash for oily skin during the summer, an oatmeal one for when my skin is dry, Kiss My Face Peaches and Cream face moisturizer during the day and Organic Coconut Oil at night has DRASTICALLY improved my skin. Now I'm just trying to get rid of my hyperpigmentation and scarring. The coconut oil is what made the biggest difference for me...it's been a miracle product!

hey im also having problems with the scarring problem and the red spots..but believe me i have an idea of what your son is going through. i just graduated from high school and though my first two years were awsome, my last two were miserable!!! because of acne

what i regret the most is letting my acne get to me emotionally, i didn't want to go out in public and i even had attendance problems! so try to cheer him up as much as possible, the feeling of having acne is unexplainable.. ESPECIALLY when it seems uncurable

OKAY.. i would definetly recommend accutane.. i tried all the tv products including proactiv , NOTHING.. once i finally got into accutane it did wonders!! accutane is a 6 month minimum prescription that DOES make it worse the first month or two (just like any other treatment it makes it worse at the beginning).. be patient. it may leave spots where the acne used to be but i can finally say im acne free and have been since i stopped using accutane, i wash my face daily and i am now waiting for feb. to get laser surgery (must wait 6 months after takin accutane).

MAKE SURE he drinks lots and lots of water.. makes a HUGE difference! .. cleansers for oily skin.. umm.. and dont use numerous products at once

BEST OF LUCK !!!!!!!
