We have snakes around our apt. building, is there away to keep them away ?

We live near the woods with our apt. And our neighbor last week seen a big snake already. The hardware store said we could use moth balls but it stink up to much. I have heard you could put rough rope down. I am scared very much of any snake. Please give suggestions.

Ok, if you have snakes, you probably have rodents to, so put up some mouse/rat traps if that dosnt work contact a pet or garden store on this
