We are not amused - Unfunnily Films!?

There's Something about Mary for me. I've never been too keen on that kind of comedy but it is probably the unfunniest and most uninspired film I've ever seen, it has succeeded in putting me off most American attempts at comedy for life.

It's obviously one of those films that you will either love it or hate it. I perosnally love the film, but I can see how you don't get the humour. If you don't get it, then it will come across as very boring.

I 'got' the humour - I just didn't think it was a particularly strong showing; I loved the supporting cast, I just felt the Napoleon character was a dull, obvious, 'dweeby' characature that's been done to death already (and better) by hundreRAB of comedy actors/writers.

With that character dominating it made for very tedious viewing :(

Yep I agree about Rat Race...so unfunny it almost became funny..

I also found the Police Academies became bad after a few..the first couple or so I found funny but they just became cringeworthy after that (or maybe it's my age..watch the first few at a young age, split my sides laughing at them, watch the next few as an adult..not the same effect! Like Mr Bean!)

Not at all. Every version of HHGTTG as had significantly different plotline and characterization - something Adams described as them "deliberately contradicting" one another. Change I have no problem with - you'd be hard pressed to be a 'purist' of something that changes every format. The only problem I had is that the humour in Adams' work is in the smart dialogue and narrative. That could change - but to remove the majority of the intelligence and weird logic flights of fancy, and replace them with action sequences and slapstick was to miss the point of what made it different (and popular) in the first place. Change is perfectly good - even to be encouraged - unless it is a change from 'intelligent and funny' to 'dumb and boring'.

Totally agree about Hitchhikers, which is a terrible shame as it had so much potential.

I think anything slapstick is highly unfunny, does anyone over the age of twelve really find Mr Bean funny? Or that other tripe he did, Johnny English? Or any film where they rely on actors walking into/slipping on/being pushed/falling over things to get their laughs. Don't even get me started on Carry On films.

Oh well, I found HHGGTG funny and if not intelligent, certainly not as dumb as stuff like American Pie, [iiThere's Something about Mary[/i] and others of that ilk.

I do find Mr Bean and Johnny English funny, though as well as many of the Carry On films. I like a bit of "base" humour from time to time as well as more sophisticated stuff.
