Way to use a Blackberry on a basic cell service plan?

I activated another non-Verizon phone (happened to be Alltel's this time) and it worked successfully.

A week or so ago, I activated a Sprint device on Verizon.

It can be done.

I'm with you on the BS, cybiko123, I just wondered what 'brand' your phone was, so I would know if they activated a non-verizon phone for you -- and if so, what type of phone.

Don't know what to think about the inconsistent experiences, nickrm. This Verizon guy made it clear that they (or at least he) will not activate any non-verizon phone. And my attempt to activate myself online was unsucessful. I got a message saying activation was unsuccessful and to call Verizon for help.

Seems like Verizon is just clamping down on people's options so as to sell more phones. If the software on some CDMA phones truly does prevent them from working on the Verizon network, it's probably by design -- to force more phone sales -- and not necessity.

Do you know if there is any department or person within Verizon that could provide a comprehensive explanation for these inconsistent experiences?

Also, I'm finding language in the Alltel/Verizon merger Q&A on Verizon's site which makes it clear that they will not allow alltel customers to use their old alltel phone if they upgrade to a new Verizon plan.

From the site: Q-How do I change my (Alltel) calling plan?
A-You can change your plan anytime at My Verizon or by calling Customer Service by dialing *611 from your wireless phone or (800) 922-0204 from any phone. All Verizon Wireless plans require a Verizon Wireless device.

Here's what it says under "calling plan information" on the Verizon site:

Required Equipment: GPS–capable CDMA tri–mode or all–digital phone with Verizon Wireless software.

I'd sure like to understand how you are able to activate these other phones, but I can't activate this one.
