Watchmen

It may turn out not to be a treat for superhero fans as it subverts everything about comic book heroes and (to be pedantic) only has one actual superhero.
The trailer looks good but then so did the one for LXG.
The US audiences will hate it and so will Alan Moore.

I haven't read the graphic novel (yet), but I thoroughly loved it and will definately see it again.

It was visually stunning.
 
Loved it. The 160 minutes flew by. The inevitable extended cut with the animated sequences has me salivating in anticipation already. Doing good biz in the States which, for a film of this length without stars is bloody good.

There shouldn't be any 'young viewers' seeing it. It's an 18 certificate.:confused:

Watched the Watchmen last night. Overall I really enjoyed it being a fan of the comic. I didn't even mind the changed ending.

There are so many really great scenes that it makes it easier to forgive some of the clunkier ones ( the Owlship sex scene is particularly badly done). I wasn't that impressed with the gore either. Sometimes it's better to imply the violence rather than see it in full technicolour. For example, the scene in The Dark Knight where the Joker smashes the guys head onto the table and rams the pencil in his eye is far more effective than seeing a guy getting his arms chopped off with a buzzsaw in full view. We don't need to see it, especially if the special effects are a bit rubbery.

Perhaps the director knew that knew that as Watchmen is such an unusual take on the superhero genre that to make it more suitable for younger people would force him to compromise the story. It's more a political and moral driven story with some super hero elements. By enhancing the gore and sex it means that the target audience has to be more mature.

I think it might struggle at the box office. It's a superhero move without any real heroes to root for. Those looking for a story based movie will probably be distracted by the superhero elements. It's a real weird one! I would still recommend seeing it.

I Was listening to a Filmmakers Q & A that Zack Snyder did on Playstation Home along with Dave Gibbons,and he essentially said that he is a fan of the Graphic Novel,and When Warners approached him to direct the film they wanted a PG-13 film that was possibly Franchisable,but he couldn't do that,it was either all or nothing hence why hes stuck to the more mature market

Im off to watch it at Manchester Imax in a hour or two,cant wait really looking forward to it
 
I liked the pacing. It was slow, even leisurely, and most of felt like part of an on-going series rather than something building up to a climax. Overall I enjoyed it more than The Dark Knight (which I wasn't a big fan of). I've not read the comics.

The ending did seem long, but that's mostly because it had a lot to get through. I was able to figure out who the bad guy was pretty early.
 
I want to see this it looks so good but i guess i'll have to wait till the dvd release as its an 18 and i'm only 17. I was really looking forward to seeing this aswell.
 
I'm thinking just the opposite, with reference to US audiences. They bought the comic, and have been 'educated' over the years as to what it's about. It could be the right time for this material.

As for Alan Moore, he's an innovative writer, but sometimes his own worst enemy. AFAIK the makers of Watchmen the movie have done everything they can do replicate the comic, including pre-planning an extended DVD version, with lots of the little subtleties that won't make it into the movie proper. But at least they've been filmed. :)
 
ive read the novel and i must say the bits they changed were an improvement - buuuuuuuut i thought the film was pretty awful.

way too long, it just dragged and dragged; too nihilistic - i didnt care what happened to any of them, dare i say it too pretentious too?

plus matthew goode and malin ackerman were terrible
 
I'm not convinced that the people who read Watchmen are the same age group who frequent US cinemas. Anyone who hasn't read it and turns up expecting Spiderman etc. will be in for a shock.
I don't understand AM's attitude to the filming of his work: if he hates the idea so much why did he give up control of the material or at least not deal himself a better hand in the production process? I can only assume that DC actually own all the material and he's stuck with a bad deal he made a long time ago. SounRAB familiar.
I look forward to Watchmen and I'm intrigued by the fact that there's no one in it I've actually heard of. Sometimes this helps with a movie's believability even if it doesn't always put bums on seats.
 
The British comics industry is hardly any better.

Before the likes of Wagner & Mills forced the issue in 2000 A.D. writers/artists received no credit for their work.
 
it will be on iplayer but he said it was like a love letter to every comic book fan and if anything it's too much like the book and so he hope people not familiar with it find it challenging rather than feel shut out kind of thing.

Also had loaRAB of clips I hadn't seem before that were right out of the book - eg when rorshach leaves the note for moloch in the fridge (behind you) etc, the crowd dispersing scene with archie at the start of the book

Really looked ace I have to say!
 
saw it at the imax last night - loved it - my wife - also loved it - and she was really dragged to see it.

Hope they show the extended cut in london (with the pirate story in it) apparently it's being sown in LA and NY (must be in London too surely!)

Seriously though, I am enjoying the posts of those who have been to see the film already, I am off to see the film tomorrow and I can't wait! :D
