Watching This is England.....

I am only 40 minutes in but have just seen the scene in which the 11/12 year old boy kisses (looks proper) the 16/18 year old girl.

I have to question the artistic vision of this. It looks like a good, well acted film, but that bit stirred me.

Thats was probably that boys first kiss

He was supposed to be 12 and she was 15 about to turn 16 (she has her 16th birthday later on in the film). In reality, Thomas Turgoose was 13 and Rosamund Hanson was 15 and so there was only about two years between them! I agree it looked like a much bigger gap though. That scene does feel a bit wrong and yet it's quite cute.

Hopefully in the TV series, Shaun will have finally grown to Smell's height. :D

I'm pretty sure (source unknown) that I had read that the film draws on some of Shane Meadows' own experiences whilst growing up. This is hinted through the main characters name:

Shane Meadows = Shaun Field

From my own experience, I remember kiRAB who looked that young having girlfrienRAB who looked that old(-er), it wasn't that unusual where I grew up. The boys were always the little hard-nuts who liked showing off, they had a confidence that was probably attractive to the girls; at the same time the girls probably felt 'safer' going out with a young-looking boy (a more grown-up lad may have proved a more daunting prospect).

I loved this film, but as a previous poster said there are quite a few disturbing scenes. Still one of the best British films of the last 10 years.
