Washing machine paint is shooting off...?

We had an old washing machine and it was getting thrown away so i smacked the top with a hammer and i herd a wierd noise and i noticed the paint was actully shooting off in sand sized pices it was shooting about 2 feet in the air..WHY
 
You mean "heard"?

Probably the strain from being attached to the metal, and the metal being struck and possibly bent, the paint couldn't maintain the contour and it's own bond strength was being compromised and started cracking. The tension is probably what propelled the pieces into the air.
