The jet he turns into isn't an Earth jet but a space jet (a la something like an X-wing, presumably from another planet they raided in search of the all spark.) I'm sure someone from the Transformers crew will get a lot more specific in their answer but, that's the gist.

I've got another question. I think I just missed the reasoning for this, but, when they found the All Spark, why didn't one of the autobots just destroy it? Optimus said they had to destroy it, and when Bumblebee got his hands on it, he and the others ended up taking it to a city and then Sam was trying to get it to the top of that building's roof.
