I am writing a paper about this and would like to get the opinions of ordinary Americans. I wasn't in the US for the most of this year.

1) If your answer to this question is Yes there was racism, Can you please quote me some examples and explain why you think that is racist.

2) If your answer is No, then can you explain why some people say there was racism.

3) For those who think, there was racism, do you think this came from just the media. If yes, which media just Fox News or even other Liberal media. Again please quote examples.

I can only go by what I saw in the media reports and interviews, coupled with what I over heard/observed on the street, restaurants and malls as I traveled around in my daily life. Based upon what I observed of both white voters and black voters this was Absolutely a Race based election, on both sides.

There was racism in past elections. The racism just wasn't directed toward the candidate for his/her skin color. For example, Abraham Lincoln, he was not running to end slavery, in fact he didnt even HATE slavery, but Southerners were scared he was going to end it, which made things worse for free slaves AND owned slaves.

There was absolute racism. I FEEL, black people, to this day, still think they are owed something for past indiscretions. I guess they think this is "that" something that will finally make them feel like they are good enough and equal to whites (whites already think this, blacks just don't believe it because they can't get that chip off their shoulder); I hope so because I'm so sick of Affirmative Action and reverse discrimination and for white people to continually have to walk on egg shells out of fear of being "racist".

It was kind of strange, dintcha think, that John McCain came to the defense of his supporters last night after Barack Obama pointed out that people at McCain/Palin rallies were shouting out "terrorist" and "kill him!" in reference to Obama.

Now an Al Jazeera camera crew caught the honest sentiments of McCain/Palin supporters at an Ohio rally:
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
“I’m afraid if he wins, the blacks will take over. He’s not a Christian! This is a Christian nation! What is our country gonna end up like?”

“When you got a Negra running for president, you need a first stringer. He’s definitely a second stringer.”

“He seems like a sheep - or a wolf in sheep’s clothing to be honest with you. And I believe Palin - she’s filled with the Holy Spirit, and I believe she’s gonna bring honesty and integrity to the White House.”

“He’s related to a known terrorist, for one.”

“He is friends with a terrorist of this country!”

“He must support terrorists! You know, uh, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. And that to me is Obama.”

“Just the whole, Muslim thing, and everything, and everybody’s still kinda - a lot of people have forgotten about 9/11, but… I dunno, it’s just kinda… a little unnerving.”

“Obama and his wife, I’m concerned that they could be anti-white. That he might hide that.”

“I don’t like the fact that he thinks us white people are trash… because we’re not!”

Yep, McCain must be so proud.

The rest of us, well ... let's just say those polls should tell the story.

Yes there was racism from both sides no doubt. For starters the minorities who never contributed to any election their entire lives showed up in droves to vote for the black man, most couldn't tell you who his running mate was or even tell you one policy.

From the right I am sure there were people that would not vote for Obama simply because he was black but the racism from the right was not nearly as prominent as that from the left.

Hmm. I can't cite specific examples but given the over 100 MILLION people voted, I'd imagine there were some instances where racism played a role.

I expect you'll get lots of rants about the Black vote. Over 90% of Blacks voted for Obama. Of course approximately 90% of Blacks voted for Gore, Kerry and Clinton (x2) as well.

Yes when Obama made that speech about how, "they say I have a funny name. They say I don't look like other Presidents....." This was playing on racism. His.

Yes, just one example was Oprah W. who has never endorsed a candidate before, another one is Colin Powell, who said it may not be the only reason but yes Obama being a African American was part of why he backed him.

Racism is a word used to define something bad, different behavioral patterns, by the media (to create a news flash) or someone with different views of everyday life. The word should mean: separation of the species. Racism will always be with us. There will always be red ants and black ants, it is the way we were created.

First of all, Happy's information is dubious at best - I wouldn't trust it.

Secondly, there was no racism in the campaign because racism is defined as institutionalized policies that benefit one race at the deteriment of others. Nothing of the sort was present in any of the campaigns. None of the candidates advocated racial superiority or policies supporting this philosophy, nor did any of the campaigns practice it.

As far as bigotry is concerned, I really don't know where to begin. As someone who has followed the election for two years, I can honestly say that there was a great deal of bigory present during the election. None of it came from FOX News. None of it even came from Republicans. A vast majority of the bigotry in this election was actually spread by the Hillary Clinton campaign during the democratic primaries, and her supporters as well.

Hillary Clinton's supporters were responsible for starting and spreading this rumour that Obama was a Muslim in the hopes of scaring some of the more conservative southern/white democrats from voting for him. Her supporters have actually been caught red-handed forwarding chain mails spreading this rumour. A Hillary Clinton staffer was also responsible for leaking a photo of Obama wearing what appears to be traditional african garb to the Drudge Report to further stoke bigotry and intolerance. Finally, Hillary Clinton's own words, when asked if she thought he was a Christians where that he was "as far as I know" implying that rumours that he is a closeted Muslim might be true. Even other supporters of hers have spread this rumour, like Bob Kerrey when he spoke of how great it was that Obama was running as America's first Muslim candidate. And other prominent conservatives, like Ann Coulter and Bill Cunningham (a man McCain didn't defend as Happy would claim, but rebuked for using Obama's middle name in a derogatory fashion) all publicly announced their support for Hillary Clinton.

If you are looking for examples of racism in the Republican party, you won't find any. Mike Huckabee went on the record warning Republicans about trying to demonize Obama. John McCain openly distanced himself from comments made by the aforementioned Cunningham when they proved to be disrespectful, derogatory, and bigoted. And the most important and telling evidence is that Hillary Clinton has NEVER disavowed or denounced the tactics used by her supporters or campaign.

yes we always have a good solid platform of racism in our country
not matter what

hate is the fuel of our country and people love it because is totally free

it begin to the crazy woman next to your door and goes to the top of the white house

I would say there were alot of talk about race during this Presidential election on both sides. Black people talked about Obama in their social corners, and most thought that he was the better candidate for President regardless of his race. Now there are some black people that voted for him because he was black, but you can equally say that there were people that didnt vote for him, because he looked black. I have heard alot of stereotypical jokes about Obama from people or I just walked in on their jokes. I have heard everything from a KFC being put up across the street from the White House to he is going to paint the White House black. Thats ignorance ,but I understand. America has a hard time dealing with change, especially when it comes to a position of power. Whats funny to me is that this country was built by all folks who live in our great nation, and we seem to find common ground with one another when we are attacked by a nation outside of ours. When I was in the Army, I saw Americans when we put on our uniforms. I know we all didnt hang out with one another or share the same values when not in uniform, but we learned to work with one another and defend this great nation together as a Team. Racism and Stereotypes will never go away, but Change wont either. Things will always change no matter what. I think there was a little racism on all sides to a certain degree, but I also think that there were more informed voters who looked past race.
