Was the Titanic 1997 film that bad?

I love Titanic, a family friend lent it my parents when it first came out on dvd and the family watched it but i did not bother thinkin noway would i like that, but i was bored the next day and decided to watch it and i loved it that much i went straight to town centre and got the dvd for myself.

I now have the special Edition DVD , great movie
 
I hated it.

I was so disappointed - after all the hype and awarRAB I expected something really good but it was just a NOTHING film.
I couldn't possibly ever watch it again.
 
As far as I recall, Titanic never did get amazing reviews. They were largely positive but I don't think they were immensely glowing.

The thing that made Titanic so big was the word of mouth from people who had seen it, which then passed on into the media, and made them overhype it (as is their way).

FWIW, I don't think it's a bad movie. It's a good movie. It's a slushy old fashioned romance with a bit of epic catastrophe thrown in for good measure (and we know the Yanks love those kinda films). It's a victim of its own success really. It's never going to appeal to everyone (I find it slightly nauseating at times but still watchable), but I do appreciate that it's a good film. Although it's based on real events, I think you've got to be in one of those "suspend your disbelief/feeling warm and fuzzy" mooRAB to really enjoy it. Winslet's acting is good. Leo's is painful, but then I've never rated him as an actor. But it is well made and directed.
 
Is that the same Oscars that decided Forest Gump was a better film than the Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction? :p

And that Crash was a better film than Brokeback Mountain?

Seriously, I went to see that film with a good friend of mine as a favour and she loved it, however I hated it with a passion - I thought the casting was dire (for the most part), the acting wooden, the script very average, the plot uninspired and even the sfx were disappointing....and don't get me started on the soundtrack! *shrugs*
 
Just because it really did happen, doesn't mean its not far fetched. That's a common misconception and Im the only one on the planet who doesn't think like this.
In this case I blame those that steered the Titanic for real rather than those involved in the movie.
Its not James Cameron's fault. He had to include that scene but the result is the same, that is very clich
 
To this day I have never come across a film I've watched and resented at the end as much as Titanic. For a start I take exception to the title, if Cameron had called it "Love On The Titanic" then I'd have agreed with that.

The movie itself was infuriating and I mean it left me seething with rage. I found the whole thing tedious and the movie was far too long. The story bored the life out of me as I found the whole Jack & Rose thing to be just insipid, boy meets girl, they fal in love despite their class difference, one of them pegs it before the end of the movie, oh boy that one never gets old (apologies for being so blunt).

The only time a smile crossed my face was when Jack died, I know that's heartless etc but that's how I felt. I've seen worse acting etc but come the end with all the women around me weeping, I just wanted to go to bed. The bloody song too drove me insane. For my own personal taste, it's simply the worst movie of all time.
 
It wasn't bad at all, it's very entertaining. Even DiCraprio couldn't spoil it. But because it's so hyped, and so talked about, it became fashionable to say you hated it. Some like to shout about how 'bad' Titanic is to try and seem different from the crowd. (Note I said 'some', not all - it is possible to genuinely dislike it, but some of the vitriol towarRAB it is ridiculous.)
 
Titanic was ok, James Cameron was able to call on knowledge and special effects that were not around in the fifties for "A Night to Remember", which I personally think was and is still a better film.
 
When i first watched it i thought it was rubbish (i was like 8 years old), but having just re-watched it the other week when it was on BBC2, i have to admit that i actually liked it. The story is far from pathetic, a little cliched maybe, but not pathetic.
 
Same here! I still have to try and hold back the tears when I watch it now. :o:rolleyes:

I would never want to sit down and watch it now but if I catch it on TV it reels me in and I end up watching the whole thing. I still love it :D
 
And that's why films and music and all that stuff is so wonderful. What works for one person won't for another - I'm trying so hard not to use the word subjective. Damn I failed. Glad you enjoyed it, but it just didn't work for me.
 
The problem with 'Titanic' is that it is a schmultzy love story built around the sinking of the Titanic. It is just full of sickening sentiment. I lost all respect for James Cameron after he directed 'Titanic'. It feels like he just sold out to Hollywood after doing the outstnding 'Aliens' and 'The Abyss'. It's a rubbish film only liked by women
 
My mum hates the film. But the only reason she hates it is for the most annoying song in the history of songs. (ok maybe a tad dramatic). But the song it annoying I agree with her.

The other reason she hates it, is that it is overly long. I don't think that it needed to be anywhere near as long as it did.

Apart from those reasons, I think she does like it a little bit.
 
I think you've hit the nail on the head there as far as I'm concerned. The film was, at best, average but it received fantastic reviews from most critics at the time. There must have been some pretty hefty backhanders for those glowing reviews, that's all I can say.

I'd never have gone to see it but a friend wanted to watch it for the 'kitsch value' (don't ask). For most of the film I was just bored and found the love story tacky and unengaging. The sinking scene was well done and I actually felt quite uncomfortable watching it some of the time, but generally I felt the entire thing was a waste of money and talent.
 
I think calling it "the worst film ever" is far too harsh. The special effects when it hits the iceberg are really good, even today (what has dated the film badly is Leonard Di Caprio's floppy bleached blond 1990s boyband hair :eek::D).

The main problem with the film is it is really, really cheesy, especially the dialogue and the boring lurve story, but you could say that about most Hollywood movies I guess.
