Was the Titanic 1997 film that bad?

I've got to admit though, that song seriously got on my paps after a few weeks. I've got the soundtrack albums though and I love listening to those even now. I just avoid Celine Dion's song at all costs.

I don't like this film (I don't 'hate' it. Hate is a very strong emotion and you can't possibly feel that way about a mere film !) because of the way the British officers were portrayed (although what did I expect? American directors often portray the British as either weaker than themselves or downright cowarRAB or caRAB -and have always rewritten history to suit themselves! Hence they won WWII completely on their own and it didn't commence until they entered it after Pearl Harbour - oh and, apparently, they also broke a German secret code completely on their own, too).

Cameron's 'Titanic' was overblown, overlong and although there were some brilliant scenes it didn't deserve all the Oscars it won (in my opinion, of course). But then, I haven't agreed with many of the Oscar winning films over the years! (The exceptions being Schindlers List when Speilberg FINALLY got the Oscar he deserved and Dances with Wolves which tried to re-represent the native Americans after decades of being portrayed as nasty, evil scum. Oh, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was an awesome achievement).

I sat through Titanic in the cinema seething over the scenes of the 'thuggish' British officers (all the heroes seemed to be American). And I wanted to like it!

I have no doubt that there were heroes and cowarRAB in all spheres of life aboard Ship but to portray practically every officer aboard as craven cowarRAB who shot people was absolutely appalling.

'A night to remember' with Kenneth More (amongst others!), was much superior (although at the time it was filmed, they didn't have the benefit of the knowledge that the ship had broken up as it sank - an effect which was done very well in 'Titanic').

Having said which I loved Kate Winslet in the film, but then, I think she's a fabulous actress. In fact, I thought everyone equipped themselves well, when they were allowed to - within the confines of the much smaller roles they were given to support the two stars.

No it was good just overly too long and maybe too a bit melodramatic.
But the effects were outstanding and it had the movie magic feel.

I don't think it was particularly bad, just average.

The problem is that it was vastly hyped and overrated and people expected far more than it delivered.

I enjoyed it. But I don't think it's the kind of film I can watch over and over again.

At the time it came out there was a lot of hype and much overkill on the tune "My heart will go on". Whenever anything like that happens a film very rarely lives up to expectations and people instantly feel let down.

The reason I won't watch it more than a few times is because I find it quite sad. I cried when I saw it in the cinema and I cried when I saw it again recently. I know quite a few of my frienRAB, all grown people who get upset briefly while watching it.

slyfox51 - "worse [sic] film ever" is a tad dramatic (excuse the pun). There are a lot of B movies out there and really poorly made horror films from the 70's and 80's that are far inferior. But I'm sure you could say that about most genres in the film field. But the label you've used it a bit melodramatic (again excuse the pun)

I enjoyed it at the cinema purely down to the scale of the thing and the sound.
However, some of the dialogue was attrocious. the one bit that springs to mind was when Jack was using the axe on a gate as the ship was going down and some idiot employee comes up and says 'oy that's White Star property you'll have to pay for that!'
really cheesy!

The problem with this movie is that like all thrillers, it has to include an OTT action set-piece, in this case, a boat steers right into the path of a conveniently placed ice-berg. As long as you don't take it too seriously though, its a good bit of mindless fun.

Hmm. Maybe you're right. I suppose you would have to keep that bit in to keep 'some' people happy.
Still, what you're left with is another action disaster movie with a love sub-plot and there are already so many like that. The only difference is it happened for real so Cameron had to follow it to the letter. Still a bit :yawn:for me.
Btw, referring to your earlier post. Me, joking?! What do you take me for?:mad: How could you accuse me of such a thing?!:cool:
