Was joining the marines or any other branch worth it?

Has anyone been in the marines or any other branch because my goal is to become a marine sniper and i know tv and movies make it look glorious but i know its really not but im just wondering if joining was really worth it because i really want to join
um i kind of meant would it be worth it because your putting your life on the line to defend the men around you so i guess im saying is it worth dieing for because i think it is i just want other opinions
 
Is it worth it? Is it worth WHAT exactly? What do you imagine are the negative and liabilities of joining the marines, and what do you imagine are the benefits? Weigh them against each other and then make a decision. THEN go back to school and learn how to punctuate.
